Veterinary Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a veterinary technician in Texas?
To become a veterinary technician in Texas, you must graduate from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program, pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination, and obtain a license from the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. The Board oversees licensure and requires you to complete an application and submit proof of education and exam results before practicing. Accredited programs are offered at Texas A&M, Lone Star College, and Sul Ross State University, among others.
How much do veterinary technicians make in Texas?
Veterinary technicians in Texas earn a median of about $39,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $30,320 for the lowest 10% to over $54,610 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire veterinary technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring veterinary technicians in Texas right now include Ethos Veterinary Health, Petco, and VCA Animal Hospitals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's density of specialty and emergency animal hospitals, combined with large multi-location clinic groups, means consistent openings across the state's major metros year-round.
Which Texas cities have the most veterinary technician jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas account for the most veterinary technician openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas drive volume through their concentration of emergency and specialty veterinary hospitals and corporate clinic networks, while San Antonio's steady population growth and expanding suburban footprint have made it an increasingly active hiring market for companion animal practices.
Are there remote veterinary technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Veterinary technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring direct patient care, so the vast majority of roles are on-site. About 0% of veterinary technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in veterinary telehealth triage or medical records and compliance support rather than direct clinical care.
How can I get hired as a veterinary technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a veterinary assistant role at a Texas clinic while you complete an AVMA-accredited program, then transitioning internally once licensed. Large Texas employers like Banfield Pet Hospital and BluePearl Veterinary Partners regularly hire new graduates and offer structured onboarding for candidates coming directly from accredited programs. Enrollment in a Texas-based accredited program, paired with the VTNE credential and any externship hours completed during school, gives candidates without prior clinical experience a concrete edge over other applicants.
Where can I find and apply to veterinary technician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to veterinary technician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find roles that match your experience and credentials and apply directly to the ones that fit.
