Description
Your role at GEI.
GEI is seeking an experienced structural engineer to join our dams and water resources consulting practice. Dams, reservoirs, hydroelectric developments, and other water resources facilities are crucial components of our nation’s infrastructure, providing clean energy, water supply, and flood control. GEI serves public and private clients operating some of the largest and most interesting water resources projects in the world. Our roles include designing new facilities, upgrading existing developments, evaluating safety, and assessing risks. As part of GEI’s dams and water resources practice, you will work with the leading experts in dams and dam safety at one of the premier firms in the industry.
This position can be filled in our Woburn or Franklin (MA), Bedford (NH), Portland (ME), or Ithaca (NY) offices, with an expectation of about three days a week in-office (i.e., about two days remote). Dams in our clients’ portfolios are in some of the most spectacularly scenic parts of the country, including the Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and New Hampshire, the lakes of central Maine, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Work will occasionally require the ability and willingness to hike moderate distances (5+ miles), traverse steep terrain, climb ladders, enter narrow galleries, and access remote sites by off-road vehicle and helicopter.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Serve as structural lead, and/or project/task manager.
- Oversee and review designs developed by staff engineers. Mentor and promote technical development of staff engineers.
- Analyze new and existing concrete gravity dams, arch dams, buttress dams, spillways, powerhouses, intake towers, penstocks, dam gates, and similar structures for stresses, stability, and performance under extreme loads.
- Analyze and design other facilities as needed, including foundations, retaining walls, temporary works, and special structures.
- Develop and evaluate alternatives for new facilities and upgrades to existing projects.
- Complete detailed design calculations and prepare contract documents and technical specifications.
- Inspect ongoing dam and water resources construction projects for conformance with design requirements.
- Inspect existing projects as part of regulatory compliance programs (e.g., FERC Part 12D).
- Participate in semi-quantitative risk analysis workshops.
- Prepare formal written reports, give presentations, and participate in internal and client meetings.
- Prepare scopes of work, budgets, and schedules.
Minimum Qualifications
- B.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
- 7 to 15+ years’ experience in structural engineering related to dams and water resources structures.
- Professional Engineer licensure or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire.
- Experience with structural analysis software (SAP2000/STAAD/RISA/ANSYS, etc.) and AutoCAD.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to travel on temporary assignments.
- Willingness and ability to work in the field and in inclement weather.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience managing multi-discipline design projects.
- Experience in analysis and design of hydraulic structures.
- M.S. in Structural Engineering.
- Experience with Revit modeling or BIM.
- Structural Engineer licensure.

Which companies sponsor visas for software consultants in New Hampshire?
Defense contractors and financial services firms lead sponsorship activity for software consultants in New Hampshire. BAE Systems in Nashua, Fidelity Investments, and healthcare organizations like Dartmouth Health have histories of filing H-1B petitions for technical roles. Consulting firms with New Hampshire offices, including large national practices, also sponsor candidates when the role meets specialty occupation requirements.
Which visa types are most common for software consultant roles in New Hampshire?
The H-1B is the most common visa for software consultants in New Hampshire, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN status under the USMCA treaty. Candidates already holding L-1 intracompany transferee status or O-1 extraordinary ability visas also work in the state's consulting sector.
Which cities in New Hampshire have the most software consultant sponsorship jobs?
Manchester and Nashua account for the largest concentration of software consultant sponsorship activity in New Hampshire. Manchester functions as the state's commercial hub, with a growing technology and professional services sector. Nashua attracts defense and engineering firms given its proximity to Massachusetts. Concord, as the state capital, hosts some public-sector and government technology consulting opportunities as well.
How to find software consultant visa sponsorship jobs in New Hampshire?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and lets you filter software consultant roles by state, including New Hampshire. Rather than sorting through postings that don't clarify sponsorship availability, Migrate Mate surfaces positions where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor. This saves significant time for candidates on H-1B, TN, or other work visas actively searching in the New Hampshire market.
Are there state-specific considerations for software consultants seeking sponsorship in New Hampshire?
New Hampshire has no state income tax, which affects prevailing wage comparisons and total compensation discussions during the hiring process. The state's technology sector is smaller than neighboring Massachusetts, so sponsoring employers tend to be established mid-to-large firms rather than early-stage startups. Dartmouth College in Hanover also creates a pipeline of international graduate talent into regional consulting and technology roles.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored software consultant jobs in New Hampshire?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
