Which companies sponsor visas for corporate legal counsels in New York?
Large financial institutions including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs regularly sponsor corporate legal counsel roles, as do multinational corporations headquartered in Manhattan such as Pfizer, IBM, and Colgate-Palmolive. Major media and tech companies with New York offices, including Google and NBCUniversal, also have established sponsorship track records for in-house legal positions requiring specialized expertise.
Which visa types are most common for corporate legal counsel roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for corporate legal counsel roles in New York, as the position typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in law or a related field. Candidates with extraordinary legal accomplishments may qualify for the O-1A. The TN visa covers Canadian and Mexican attorneys in specific circumstances, and the L-1A or L-1B applies to intracompany transfers within multinational organizations.
Which cities in New York have the most corporate legal counsel sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the overwhelming majority of corporate legal counsel sponsorship opportunities in the state, particularly in Midtown and Lower Manhattan where financial services, media, pharmaceutical, and technology companies concentrate their legal departments. White Plains and Buffalo host regional corporate offices with occasional in-house counsel openings, but candidates targeting visa sponsorship will find the deepest market in Manhattan.
How to find corporate legal counsel visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship and filters listings to corporate legal counsel roles in New York. Beyond the board, targeting employers with documented H-1B LCA filings in the legal sector and focusing your search on New York City's financial district and Midtown corporate hubs improves your chances of finding actively sponsoring organizations.
What state-specific or role-specific factors should corporate legal counsel candidates know about New York sponsorship?
New York bar admission is frequently required or strongly preferred for corporate legal counsel roles in the state, and employers typically factor bar exam eligibility into their sponsorship decisions. New York City's highly competitive in-house legal market means employers often prioritize candidates with BigLaw backgrounds or LLM degrees from U.S. institutions. LLM programs at Columbia, NYU, and Fordham serve as a notable pipeline for international attorneys entering the New York in-house market.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored corporate legal counsel jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
