Which companies sponsor visas for mental health therapists in New York?
Large health systems are the most consistent sponsors. NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, Montefiore Medical Center, and Mount Sinai Health System have all sponsored mental health therapy roles. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and community mental health agencies are also notable sponsors, particularly because they can leverage the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program for clinicians serving underserved populations across New York.
Which visa types are most common for mental health therapy roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most widely used visa for licensed clinical social workers, licensed mental health counselors, and marriage and family therapists, as these roles typically require a master's degree and qualify as specialty occupations. The J-1 Conrad 30 waiver is a significant pathway for psychiatrists and some therapists willing to work in Health Professional Shortage Areas across New York State for a three-year service commitment.
Which cities in New York have the most mental health therapy sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the overwhelming majority of sponsored mental health therapy positions, driven by the density of hospital systems, nonprofits, and behavioral health organizations across all five boroughs. Buffalo and Rochester also have active hiring markets, particularly through regional health systems and FQHCs. The New York State Office of Mental Health operates facilities statewide, including in smaller cities like Albany and Syracuse, where competition for sponsored roles can be lower.
How to find mental health therapy visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by state and role to surface mental health therapy positions in New York where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship. This saves significant time compared to manually screening general job postings. Roles at FQHCs and large health systems tend to appear most frequently, so setting up alerts for those employer types within Migrate Mate is a practical starting point.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for mental health therapy visa sponsorship?
New York has its own licensure requirements that international therapists must meet before practicing, including state-specific supervised hours and an examination, which can affect your timeline even after visa approval. The Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program has a fixed annual cap per state, so slots in New York can fill early in the federal fiscal year. Employers in Health Professional Shortage Areas designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration are generally more experienced with the waiver process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mental health therapy jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
