About us: Voyant Photonics, based in the heart of New York City, is transforming machine perception with a new class of LiDAR devices that are compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand and powerful enough to measure range, velocity, and reflectivity with unparalleled accuracy. By leveraging cutting-edge silicon photonic chips smaller than your fingertip, we deliver sensors that are not only revolutionary in performance but also affordable enough to integrate into any system. Our technology disrupts the status quo of bulky, expensive, and power-hungry LiDAR systems, making high-precision sensing accessible for widespread adoption in robotics, autonomous vehicles, drones, industrial automation, and beyond. With Voyant, the next generation of machines can see, understand, and navigate the world like never before. Discover how we’re redefining what’s possible by making real products out of cutting edge research in silicon photonics.
Why Join us? At Voyant, you’ll help build some of the world’s most complex silicon photonics chips, reimagined for high-performance 3D sensing. Our chips are at the heart of our LiDAR systems, and your work has a direct impact on our core product and roadmap. As a Senior Silicon Photonics Engineer, you’ll play a key role in defining photonic architecture and developing new passive and active components. In your first year, you’ll own simulations, and design system PICs, working hands-on from concept through implementation. You’ll join a small, fast-growing team that collaborates tightly across photonics, systems, packaging, and electronics. The role offers both deep technical ownership and real growth potential — from leading component design to eventually overseeing full tapeout efforts across disciplines. If you're excited by cutting-edge technology and meaningful challenges, this is a rare opportunity to shape a core system in a company that’s bringing photonics innovation to market.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and simulate photonic components and system-level functionality and performance
- Design schematics, draw layout, as well as work with layout engineers to create photonic systems and component test structures
- Own and drive complex tapeouts to completion on time
- Work closely with external manufacturing partners to inform component design, process integration, and performance monitoring
- Develop component and system-level optical testing plans and collaborate with the test team to develop optoelectronic testing setups, perform hands-on photonic component and optical system-level testing
- Work with the product team to transition/scale testing for performance evaluation
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate our photonic chips into the LIDAR system and evaluate their performance
- Contribute to the expansion of our IP portfolio through patent filing
Qualifications
- Ph.D. with research in silicon photonics with 2+ years’ experience
- Proven track record leading one or more successful silicon photonics foundry tapeouts
- Strong understanding of planar waveguide optics, both passive components such as waveguides, multiplexers/demultiplexers, tapers, couplers and active such as waveguide detectors, lasers and optical amplifiers
- Strong understanding of photonic system-level design concerns
- Strong understanding of photonic component-level design concerns
- Experience in photonic fabrication
- Good understanding of CMOS manufacturing process steps and constraints on the design of photonic devices
- Proficient with mainstream photonic components and systems simulation packages such as Lumerical, Tidy3D and COMSOL
- Proficient with complex optoelectronic lab testing techniques and equipment, necessary to validate designs, including high speed detectors, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, precision positioning setups
- Collaborative in a multi-disciplinary startup environment, ability to work both with local and remote team members as well as with our manufacturing partners
- Independent, analytical thinker, comfortable in a fast-paced dynamic frontier technology environment
Benefits Package:
- Competitive base salary and meaningful equity package
- Comprehensive health benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision)
- Unlimited PTO and paid company holidays
- Team events and company meetups
- Complimentary lunch provided daily at our NYC office

Which companies sponsor visas for photonics engineers in New York?
New York has a strong base of photonics and optical technology employers with documented H-1B sponsorship histories. Corning Incorporated in Corning, II-VI Incorporated facilities in the Hudson Valley, and defense contractors such as Raytheon and Northrop Grumman on Long Island regularly file LCAs for photonics engineer roles. Research institutions affiliated with universities like Columbia and RPI also sponsor international engineers through H-1B and O-1 visa pathways.
Which visa types are most common for photonics engineer roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for photonics engineers in New York, as the role qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in optical engineering, physics, or a related field. The O-1A is an alternative for engineers with published research, patents, or significant industry recognition. Some defense-sector roles may also support employment-based green card sponsorship through the PERM process.
How to find photonics engineer visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate lets you filter photonics engineer roles specifically to New York and surfaces employers with active or historical visa sponsorship records. Because sponsorship availability is not always stated in standard job postings, using Migrate Mate to identify companies that have filed LCAs for photonics or optical engineering positions in New York saves significant research time and helps you prioritize applications strategically.
Which cities in New York have the most photonics engineer sponsorship jobs?
Rochester is the most concentrated hub for photonics engineering employment in New York, historically rooted in the optical industry through companies like Corning and legacy Kodak-affiliated spinoffs. The Hudson Valley corridor, including companies near Albany and Kingston, also has notable photonics activity. Long Island, particularly around Melville and Hauppauge, hosts defense and aerospace employers that hire photonics engineers with active sponsorship programs.
Are there state-specific considerations for photonics engineers seeking visa sponsorship in New York?
New York employers sponsoring H-1B workers must meet DOL prevailing wage requirements specific to the New York metropolitan area or upstate regions, which differ from national averages. Photonics engineers in research-heavy roles affiliated with universities such as Stony Brook or Cornell may access cap-exempt H-1B filings. New York's strong university pipeline, particularly through RPI and the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics, also means employers are accustomed to hiring and sponsoring international graduates in this discipline.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored photonics engineer jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
