Which companies sponsor visas for physicists in North Dakota?
The most active sponsors for physics roles in North Dakota tend to be universities, including the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University, which regularly hire research scientists and postdoctoral fellows on H-1B visas. Energy companies operating in the Bakken region, such as those in oil exploration and reservoir modeling, occasionally sponsor physicists with specialized geophysics or instrumentation backgrounds. Federal contractors supporting regional defense or agricultural research facilities are a smaller but consistent source.
Which visa types are most common for physics roles in North Dakota?
The H-1B is the most common work visa for physics positions in North Dakota, given that physics roles at universities and research labs typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. J-1 visas are also widely used for postdoctoral researchers and visiting scientists, particularly through university exchange programs. O-1 visas appear for physicists with demonstrated extraordinary ability, though these are far less common than H-1B filings in this state.
Which cities in North Dakota have the most physics sponsorship jobs?
Fargo and Grand Forks account for the majority of physics-related visa sponsorship activity in North Dakota. Fargo benefits from North Dakota State University's research programs in materials science, optics, and applied physics, while Grand Forks is anchored by the University of North Dakota and its energy and aerospace research programs. Bismarck sees occasional openings tied to state government labs and energy sector employers, but the university cities dominate sponsorship volume.
How to find physics visa sponsorship jobs in North Dakota?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find physics visa sponsorship jobs in North Dakota, since it filters specifically for roles where employers have demonstrated sponsorship history. For physics in this state, it's worth focusing your search on research-intensive institutions in Fargo and Grand Forks, as university and lab employers file LCAs regularly and are generally familiar with the H-1B process. Filtering by role type on Migrate Mate helps surface postdoctoral, research scientist, and applied physics openings that are realistically open to international candidates.
Are there any state-specific considerations for physicists seeking visa sponsorship in North Dakota?
North Dakota's physics job market is smaller and more specialized than coastal states, so competition for sponsored roles can be tight within a narrow set of employers. University positions often come with defined hiring cycles tied to grant funding, meaning sponsorship availability can shift between academic years. Physicists with backgrounds in energy applications, particularly geophysics, petrophysics, or remote sensing relevant to the Bakken Formation, may find stronger fit with private sector employers that do not typically sponsor as frequently as research universities.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physics jobs in North Dakota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
