Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as an Elementary School Teacher
Target public school districts with visa experience
Large urban districts like Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago regularly sponsor international teachers. They have established immigration processes and understand the H-1B timeline requirements.
Get your teaching credentials evaluated early
States require credential evaluation for international degrees. Start this process before job searching since it takes 6-8 weeks and employers need confirmation of your qualifications.
Apply for high-need subject areas
Districts are more willing to sponsor teachers in shortage areas like STEM, special education, ESL, and bilingual education. Highlight any specialized training or language skills.
Consider private and charter schools
Private schools often have more flexibility in hiring timelines and may be willing to wait for visa processing. Charter schools also frequently sponsor international teachers.
Network through teacher exchange programs
Programs like Teach for America or cultural exchange organizations can provide pathways to permanent positions. These connections often lead to sponsorship opportunities with partner districts.
Prepare for state licensing requirements
Each state has different teacher certification requirements. Research the specific state's process and be prepared to complete additional coursework or exams if needed for licensure.

Find Elementary School Teacher JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need a teaching degree to get sponsored as an elementary teacher?
Yes, you need a bachelor's degree in education, elementary education, or a specific subject area you plan to teach. Most states also require completion of a teacher preparation program and passing state certification exams. Alternative certification programs exist but still require a bachelor's degree as the foundation.
Which visa is most common for elementary school teachers?
The H-1B visa is most common since teaching is a specialty occupation requiring a specific degree. Some teachers may qualify for O-1 visas if they have extraordinary achievements in education, or TN visas if they're Canadian or Mexican citizens with the right qualifications.
Will schools sponsor teachers who need visa renewals?
Most established school districts will sponsor renewals for teachers in good standing, especially given the teacher shortage. However, this varies by district policy and budget. Discuss renewal support during the hiring process and get commitments in writing when possible.
Can international teachers work while their H-1B is pending?
If you're already in valid status and file a change of status or extension, you can work under the same-employer portability rule once the petition is filed. If you're outside the U.S., you must wait for approval and visa stamping before starting work.
Do substitute teaching roles qualify for visa sponsorship?
Generally no. Substitute positions are typically temporary and don't meet the full-time requirement for H-1B sponsorship. You need a permanent, full-time teaching position with a specific job offer to qualify for most work visas requiring employer sponsorship.
How to find Elementary School Teacher jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Elementary School Teacher positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international educators with sponsoring schools. Focus your search on international schools, private academies, and public school districts in high-need areas that commonly sponsor H-1B, J-1, or TN visas for qualified teachers with proper education credentials and teaching certifications.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Elementary School Teacher jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
