How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Professor
Cap-Exempt H-1B Files Year-Round at Every University
Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Johns Hopkins, and all accredited universities file H-1B for professors with no lottery, no cap, and no seasonal filing window. This is the single most reliable H-1B pathway in the U.S. immigration system.
EB-1B Outstanding Researcher Accelerates Green Card Processing
Faculty with published research, citations, editorial board service, and peer review activity qualify for EB-1B without PERM labor certification. Processing is significantly faster than standard EB-2 because no labor market test is required.
STEM Faculty Positions Have the Most Acute Shortages
Computer science, electrical engineering, data science, nursing, and biomedical departments face the most severe hiring gaps, with CS departments at top universities having over 40% international faculty. These disciplines offer the fastest hiring timelines and highest compensation.
J-1 to H-1B Is the Standard Transition Path
Most international scholars enter on J-1 exchange visitor status for postdoctoral research before transitioning to H-1B for permanent faculty roles. J-1 waivers through No Objection Statements from the home country avoid the two-year residency requirement.
National Interest Waiver Allows Self-Petition Independence
Professors with exceptional research impact can file NIW green card petitions independently without employer sponsorship. This provides flexibility to change institutions without restarting the immigration process.
Community Colleges and Teaching Institutions Also Sponsor
Cap-exempt H-1B is not limited to R1 research universities. Community colleges, liberal arts colleges, and regional universities file for faculty across disciplines with domestic hiring shortages.

Do universities sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, universally. All accredited U.S. universities qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing year-round with no lottery. Over 30% of tenure-track faculty at research universities are international scholars.
What is the typical salary for sponsored Professor roles?
Assistant professors earn $72,000 to $135,000 depending on discipline. Associate professors earn $88,000 to $170,000. Full professors earn $115,000 to $260,000.
What credentials do international professors need?
A Ph.D. or terminal degree in the teaching discipline is required for tenure-track appointments. Published research, conference presentations, and teaching experience are expected. STEM and biomedical fields typically require one to three years of postdoctoral research.
Which green card pathway is best for Professors?
EB-1B outstanding researcher is the fastest for faculty with published research and international recognition, skipping PERM entirely. National Interest Waiver allows self-petition for scholars with exceptional impact. EB-2 through PERM is the fallback when EB-1B criteria are not met.
