Which universities and colleges in Florida sponsor visas for professors?
The most active sponsors for professor roles in Florida include the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of Miami, Florida International University, and the University of Central Florida. Large state institution systems like the Florida State University System and the State University System of Florida have established international faculty hiring pipelines and HR teams experienced with H-1B and O-1 petitions.
Which visa types are most commonly used for professor roles in Florida?
The H-1B is the most common visa for full-time tenured and tenure-track professor positions, since faculty roles at accredited universities typically qualify as specialty occupations. The O-1A is an option for professors with exceptional records of publication, awards, or citations. J-1 exchange visitor visas are frequently used for visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers, though J-1 holders may face a two-year home residency requirement.
Which cities in Florida have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Gainesville leads due to the University of Florida's size and research output. Tallahassee follows with Florida State University and Florida A&M University as major employers. Miami is a significant hub anchored by the University of Miami and Florida International University. Orlando and Tampa are growing, supported by the University of Central Florida and the University of South Florida respectively.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Florida?
Migrate Mate filters professor job listings in Florida specifically by visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through postings from employers unwilling to sponsor. Search by role and state on Migrate Mate to see active faculty openings at Florida universities and colleges that have a documented history of sponsoring international candidates. Setting up alerts for new professor listings in Florida helps you apply early, since faculty searches often run on academic hiring calendars.
Are there any Florida-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Florida's large and diverse public university system means many institutions have dedicated international faculty hiring processes, but timelines can be long. Faculty searches typically begin 9 to 12 months before the intended start date, which affects H-1B filing windows. Florida also has a significant number of private research universities, particularly in South Florida, that sponsor outside the H-1B cap through the cap-exempt status available to higher education institutions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Florida?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
