Which universities and employers sponsor visas for professors in Arizona?
The University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University are the most active sponsors of professor visas in the state. Smaller institutions such as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Prescott campus and Midwestern University also hire international faculty. Research-intensive universities with federal grant funding tend to sponsor more frequently, particularly for STEM, engineering, and health sciences departments.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Arizona?
The H-1B is the most common visa for professors in Arizona, as academic positions at universities qualify as specialty occupations. The O-1A is another path for professors with a record of extraordinary achievement, such as major awards or published research with significant citations. J-1 exchange visitor visas are also used, particularly for visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers transitioning into faculty roles.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Arizona?
Migrate Mate filters professor roles in Arizona specifically by visa sponsorship, so you're not sorting through listings from employers who won't sponsor. Search for professor positions on Migrate Mate and filter to Arizona to see current openings at universities and research institutions. This is more targeted than general academic job boards because sponsorship willingness is built into the search.
Which cities in Arizona have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Tempe and Phoenix account for the largest share of professor sponsorship jobs in Arizona, driven by Arizona State University's multiple campuses and the broader Phoenix metro's growing higher education sector. Tucson is the second major hub, anchored by the University of Arizona. Flagstaff sees consistent but smaller volume through Northern Arizona University, particularly in education, forestry, and environmental science.
Are there any Arizona-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Arizona universities are subject to the same Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements as employers nationwide, so sponsored positions must meet wage standards for the academic rank and geographic area. Arizona's strong growth in semiconductor and advanced manufacturing industries has increased demand for engineering and materials science faculty, making those disciplines particularly active for sponsorship at both universities and research centers affiliated with industry partners.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Arizona?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
