Which universities and employers sponsor visas for professors in Indiana?
Indiana University (Bloomington and IUPUI), Purdue University (West Lafayette and regional campuses), the University of Notre Dame, and Ball State University are among the most active sponsors of faculty visas in Indiana. Smaller liberal arts colleges and community colleges do sponsor positions, though less frequently. Sponsorship activity is highest in research-intensive departments with external grant funding.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Indiana?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for tenure-track and full-time lecturer positions, as most professorships meet the specialty occupation standard requiring a relevant advanced degree. The O-1A is an option for internationally recognized scholars. J-1 visa exchange visitor status is widely used for visiting professors and postdoctoral researchers, typically sponsored through the host institution's exchange visitor program.
Which cities in Indiana have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Bloomington and West Lafayette generate the highest volume of sponsored faculty positions, anchored by Indiana University and Purdue University respectively. Indianapolis is a growing hub through IUPUI and several health sciences programs tied to IU School of Medicine. South Bend sees consistent activity through the University of Notre Dame, particularly in engineering, law, and the humanities.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Indiana?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the United States. You can filter by state and role to view professor positions in Indiana where employers have a demonstrated history of sponsoring work visas. This saves significant time compared to screening general academic job postings for sponsorship eligibility, which institutions do not always disclose upfront.
Are there any Indiana-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Indiana's largest universities are public institutions, which means H-1B petitions they file are generally cap-exempt, allowing sponsorship to begin at any time of year rather than being subject to the annual lottery. This is a meaningful structural advantage for international academics. Departments in STEM fields, nursing, and public health tend to have the most consistent sponsorship activity given demand for specialized faculty credentials.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Indiana?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
