Position Description
The University of New Hampshire, Durham invites applications for a Lecturer in Civics and Democratic Governance under the umbrella of the Responsible Governance and Sustainable Citizenship Project (RGSCP). Rank and the area of expertise is open, but we are looking for candidates that engage, from any discipline, with issues of American civics, citizenship, and democratic governance. The teaching load will be 1/2 in the first year and 2/2 in the second, with curriculum development being a primary focus in the first semester. The successful candidate will be able to offer courses in civics and political institutions (especially US institutions), as well as have the capacity to create new curriculum that will expand our university’s offerings in these areas. The candidate will work with faculty in other units across the university, especially in the new Honors College, to create a foundation for civics education.
In addition, the Fellow will be expected to conduct research in their field and help create programming for RGSCP in the area of civics.
RGSCP is a non-partisan and non-ideological project established in 2015 to support curriculum, programming and outreach on issues of democratic and ethical governance, sustainable practices, and citizenship.
Duties/Responsibilities
Teaching (75%)
- Three classes the first year (1/2), followed by two classes a semester thereafter
Research (25% of time for the last three semesters)
- Fellows are invited to conduct research and publish in their field, or contribute research toward RGSCP’s goals.
Curriculum Building (25% of time for the first semester)
- Curriculum building with a focus on contributing to new curriculum in American civics and democratic governance in conjunction with the review of UNH’s general education program.
Requirements
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent terminal degree) in Political Science or a related humanities/social science field, though candidates who concentrate on American civic institutions or civic life will be preferred.
- Demonstrated or potential excellence in teaching civics, democracy, governance, or related fields.
- Commitment to service, collaboration, and civic engagement consistent with the mission of RGSCP and the state of New Hampshire.
