Which universities and employers sponsor visas for professors in Massachusetts?
Harvard University, MIT, Boston University, Northeastern University, Tufts University, Boston College, and the University of Massachusetts system are among the most active sponsors for professor roles in Massachusetts. These institutions have established international faculty hiring pipelines and dedicated immigration support offices, meaning the sponsorship process is typically well-documented and handled in-house by HR and legal teams.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Massachusetts?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tenure-track and full-time professor positions, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a master's degree in the relevant field. The O-1A is an option for faculty with extraordinary academic recognition, such as major awards, significant publications, or leadership in professional associations. J-1 exchange visitor status is also used for visiting scholars and research faculty, though it carries different conditions.
Which cities in Massachusetts have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Boston and Cambridge together account for the largest share of professor sponsorship opportunities in Massachusetts, given the concentration of Harvard, MIT, Northeastern, Boston University, and several smaller colleges within that metro area. Worcester is a secondary hub, home to Clark University, Holy Cross, and WPI. Amherst and Springfield in western Massachusetts also generate openings through the Five College Consortium and UMass Amherst.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Massachusetts?
Migrate Mate is a job board specifically built for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the U.S. You can filter by state and role to surface professor positions at Massachusetts universities and colleges that are actively hiring sponsored candidates. This is more targeted than general job searches because listings are screened for sponsorship availability, which saves significant time when you're targeting faculty roles in a competitive academic market.
Are there any state-specific considerations for professor visa sponsorship in Massachusetts?
Massachusetts universities are subject to Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for H-1B petitions, and academic rank matters: lecturer and adjunct roles may face more scrutiny as specialty occupations compared to tenure-track positions, which more cleanly satisfy the degree-in-specific-field standard. Many Massachusetts institutions are also cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round outside the annual lottery, which is a significant advantage for both candidates and hiring departments.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Massachusetts?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
