Which visa types are most common for professor roles in South Carolina?
The H-1B is the most common visa for full-time professor positions in South Carolina, as most faculty roles qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Many universities also use the O-1A for candidates with extraordinary ability and the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa for visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and short-term academic appointments.
Which universities and institutions sponsor visas for professors in South Carolina?
The University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and the Medical University of South Carolina are the most active sponsors for professor visa petitions in the state. Smaller institutions such as College of Charleston, Winthrop University, and Furman University also sponsor international faculty, though less frequently. Research-intensive programs in STEM and health sciences tend to have the highest volume of sponsored hires.
Which cities in South Carolina have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
Columbia has the highest concentration of professor sponsorship opportunities, driven by the University of South Carolina's large faculty base and research programs. Charleston is a strong second, anchored by the Medical University of South Carolina and College of Charleston. Clemson, while a smaller city, generates consistent demand through Clemson University's engineering, agriculture, and science departments.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in South Carolina?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find professor positions in South Carolina where employers are open to visa sponsorship. You can filter by state and role to see faculty openings at South Carolina universities and research institutions. Focusing your search on R1 research universities and medical schools in the state will surface the highest concentration of sponsored academic positions.
What should international professors know about academic hiring in South Carolina?
South Carolina universities typically initiate H-1B sponsorship only after a formal offer is extended, so the tenure-track hiring cycle matters. Faculty searches often close months before a position's start date, and H-1B cap-subject filings must align with the October 1 fiscal year start. Positions at public universities may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings, which removes the lottery requirement and allows year-round petitioning.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in South Carolina?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
