Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Pennsylvania?
The H-1B is the most common long-term work visa for professors at Pennsylvania universities, as faculty positions at specialty research institutions typically qualify as specialty occupations. The J-1 Exchange Visitor visa is also widely used for visiting professors and researchers, sponsored directly by the host institution. O-1A visas appear for professors with extraordinary academic distinction, particularly at Penn, Carnegie Mellon, and Drexel.
Which cities in Pennsylvania have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
Philadelphia and Pittsburgh account for the largest share of professor sponsorship activity in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia is home to the University of Pennsylvania, Temple, Drexel, and several smaller colleges. Pittsburgh hosts Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, both of which are active sponsors. State College, home to Penn State's flagship campus, is a third significant hub, particularly for STEM and agriculture faculty.
Which employers in Pennsylvania sponsor visas for professors?
The University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, Carnegie Mellon University, Temple University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Drexel University are among Pennsylvania's most consistent sponsors for international faculty. These institutions have established international faculty hiring pipelines and dedicated HR and immigration support offices that handle H-1B and J-1 petitions for academic hires across disciplines.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Pennsylvania?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to browse professor roles at Pennsylvania universities without sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. You can narrow results to Pennsylvania and filter by academic or faculty role type to surface openings at institutions like Penn State, Carnegie Mellon, and Temple that have active sponsorship programs for international faculty.
Are there any state-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship in Pennsylvania?
Pennsylvania universities sponsoring H-1B faculty must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor, certifying that the offered position meets prevailing wage requirements for the relevant academic rank and location. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are separate wage determination areas, so prevailing wage levels differ between the two cities. Research-intensive universities in Pennsylvania are generally cap-exempt H-1B sponsors, meaning faculty hires are not subject to the annual lottery.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Pennsylvania?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
