Which employers sponsor visas for professors in New York?
The largest sponsors include Columbia University, New York University, Cornell University, Rockefeller University, and the City University of New York (CUNY) system, which alone operates 25 campuses. Smaller liberal arts colleges such as Vassar, Colgate, and Skidmore also have active sponsorship histories. Research-intensive medical schools affiliated with institutions like Weill Cornell Medicine and Mount Sinai regularly sponsor faculty in clinical and basic science departments.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in New York?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty, since professor positions at accredited universities typically meet the specialty occupation standard. The O-1A is an alternative for candidates with significant research recognition, awards, or publications. J-1 scholar status is widely used for visiting professors and postdoctoral researchers, though it carries a two-year home-residence requirement that can affect long-term plans.
Which cities in New York have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
New York City accounts for the majority of professor sponsorship activity, anchored by Columbia, NYU, Fordham, The New School, and the CUNY system across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Ithaca is significant given Cornell's size and research output. Buffalo hosts the University at Buffalo (SUNY), one of the state's largest public research universities. Rochester, home to the University of Rochester and RIT, also sees consistent faculty hiring with sponsorship.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate aggregates professor positions at New York universities and colleges that have active visa sponsorship histories, letting you filter specifically to academic roles in this state. Because faculty hiring cycles follow academic calendars with most searches opening in fall, checking Migrate Mate regularly from August through December gives you the widest selection of active listings before search committees close applicant pools.
Are there state-specific considerations for professor visa sponsorship in New York?
New York universities sponsoring H-1B faculty must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements benchmarked to the academic job market in the relevant metropolitan area, which for New York City reflects a high-cost labor market. CUNY and SUNY campuses, as public institutions, are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions at any time without waiting for the annual lottery, which benefits international faculty candidates considerably.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in New York?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
