Which employers sponsor visas for professors in Delaware?
The University of Delaware is the state's largest academic employer and the most active visa sponsor for professor roles, particularly in engineering, computer science, agriculture, and the life sciences. Delaware State University also sponsors faculty visas, with strength in STEM and historically Black college and university research programs. Wilmington University hires across business and education disciplines and occasionally supports sponsorship for qualified candidates.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Delaware?
The H-1B is the most widely used visa for professors in Delaware, as faculty positions at accredited universities typically qualify as specialty occupations. The O-1A is an option for candidates with recognized academic distinction, such as significant publications or awards. J-1 visa exchange visitor status is also common for visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers at the University of Delaware, though it is typically temporary and subject to home-residency requirements.
Which cities in Delaware have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
Newark is the clear center of academic hiring in Delaware, home to the University of Delaware and its affiliated research centers. Dover follows as the location of Delaware State University, which focuses on agriculture, STEM, and professional studies. Wilmington, though primarily a financial and corporate hub, hosts Wilmington University campuses and draws some faculty hiring in business, nursing, and education disciplines.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Delaware?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify professor openings in Delaware where employers are actively willing to sponsor. You can search by role and state to surface positions at institutions like the University of Delaware and Delaware State University. Migrate Mate focuses exclusively on international candidates, so listings are curated for those who need work authorization support.
Are there any state-specific considerations for professor visa sponsorship in Delaware?
Delaware's academic hiring is heavily concentrated in a small number of institutions, so competition for sponsored professor roles can be significant at the departmental level. The University of Delaware is classified as a research institution, which means prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B are set against regional academic benchmarks. Candidates with strong publication records, grant funding experience, or expertise in areas aligned with Delaware's research priorities in agriculture, materials science, and policy studies are generally competitive.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Delaware?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
