Search Professor Jobs in LouisianaProfessor Jobs in Louisiana: Frequently Asked Questions
Which universities and employers sponsor visas for professors in Louisiana?
The primary sponsors are Louisiana's research universities: Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Tulane University and Loyola University in New Orleans, and the University of Louisiana system campuses in Lafayette and Monroe. LSU and Tulane have dedicated international faculty support offices that regularly process H-1B petitions for tenure-track and visiting professor positions across disciplines.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Louisiana?
The H-1B is the most common visa for full-time, tenure-track professor positions because teaching and research at the university level qualifies as a specialty occupation. J-1 visas are frequently used for visiting professors, postdoctoral researchers, and exchange scholars. Candidates with exceptional academic records may also qualify for the O-1A, which does not require employer-filed lottery registration.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Louisiana?
Migrate Mate filters professor openings by state, so you can search specifically for Louisiana faculty positions where employers have indicated sponsorship willingness. This saves time compared to manually reviewing each university's careers portal. Louisiana's research institutions post positions year-round, but peak hiring for tenure-track roles typically runs August through February, aligning with academic hiring cycles.
Which cities in Louisiana have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
Baton Rouge and New Orleans account for the majority of professor sponsorship opportunities. Baton Rouge is home to LSU, Southern University, and several smaller institutions. New Orleans hosts Tulane, Loyola, Xavier University of Louisiana, and the University of New Orleans. Lafayette also has activity through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, particularly in engineering and petroleum-related disciplines.
Are there any Louisiana-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Louisiana's university hiring is heavily influenced by its energy, health sciences, and Gulf Coast research priorities, so STEM and public health faculty tend to see stronger departmental funding for sponsorship. H-1B cap-exempt status applies at most accredited universities, meaning positions are not subject to the annual lottery. Prospective faculty should confirm cap-exempt eligibility directly with the institution's international office before accepting an offer.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Louisiana?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
