Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Missouri?
The H-1B is the most common visa for full-time tenure-track and visiting professor positions, as these roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree or doctorate. The J-1 exchange visitor visa is also widely used, particularly for postdoctoral researchers and visiting faculty at institutions like Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Missouri.
Which cities in Missouri have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
St. Louis and Columbia account for the largest share of professor sponsorship opportunities in Missouri. St. Louis benefits from Washington University, Saint Louis University, and several community colleges. Columbia is home to the University of Missouri flagship campus. Kansas City also has a meaningful academic presence through the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Rockhurst University.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Missouri?
Migrate Mate filters professor openings specifically to employers in Missouri that have a documented history of sponsoring work visas, saving you from sorting through postings from employers who won't sponsor. You can browse current professor roles across Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City in one place, with visa sponsorship status clearly indicated for each listing.
Which companies sponsor visas for professors in Missouri?
The University of Missouri system (including its Columbia, St. Louis, and Kansas City campuses), Washington University in St. Louis, and Saint Louis University are among the most active sponsors for international faculty in Missouri. Smaller liberal arts institutions like Truman State University and Missouri University of Science and Technology also sponsor H-1B and J-1 visas for qualifying academic positions.
Are there any state-specific considerations for international professors in Missouri?
Missouri does not impose state-level restrictions on international faculty hiring beyond federal visa requirements. However, public universities in Missouri must comply with federal prevailing wage rules tied to the Labor Condition Application for H-1B positions, meaning offered compensation must meet Department of Labor wage levels for the specific occupational category and geographic area. Research-intensive institutions typically have dedicated international faculty hiring offices to manage this process.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Missouri?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
