Which employers in Hawaii most commonly sponsor visas for professors?
The University of Hawaii system is by far the primary source of professor visa sponsorship in Hawaii, with the flagship Manoa campus in Honolulu leading in volume. Hawaii Pacific University and Chaminade University of Honolulu also sponsor foreign national faculty, though less frequently. Community colleges within the UH system occasionally sponsor for specialized instructional roles as well.
What visa types are most commonly used for professor roles in Hawaii?
The H-1B visa is the most common pathway for professors in Hawaii, as teaching and research faculty positions typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's or doctoral degree. The O-1A visa is an option for researchers with exceptional recognition in their field. Many universities also use the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa for shorter-term visiting scholar and research appointments.
Which cities in Hawaii have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Honolulu accounts for the overwhelming majority of professor sponsorship opportunities in Hawaii, driven by the University of Hawaii at Manoa and several private institutions concentrated on Oahu. Hilo on the Big Island is a secondary hub through the University of Hawaii at Hilo, particularly for natural sciences and Hawaiian studies. Positions elsewhere on the islands are relatively rare.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Hawaii?
Migrate Mate filters professor job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to identify Hawaii-based faculty positions where employers are open to sponsoring international candidates. Because the University of Hawaii system dominates academic hiring here, setting up alerts for UH campuses and filtering by professor or faculty roles on Migrate Mate is a practical starting point for your search.
Are there any Hawaii-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship?
Hawaii's academic hiring is heavily shaped by the University of Hawaii system's Board of Regents policies and state public-sector employment rules, which can affect sponsorship timelines compared to private institutions. Research specializations tied to Hawaii's geography, including oceanography, volcanology, Pacific Island studies, and public health, tend to see stronger international recruitment. Faculty candidates should expect standard H-1B prevailing wage requirements to apply based on position level and location.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Hawaii?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
