Which employers in Maryland most commonly sponsor visas for professors?
The University of Maryland College Park, Johns Hopkins University, and Morgan State University are among the most active sponsors for professor roles in Maryland. Towson University and the University of Maryland Baltimore also appear regularly in Department of Labor disclosure data for faculty positions. Sponsorship activity is concentrated in STEM, public health, and social science departments at these research-intensive institutions.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Maryland?
The H-1B is the most common visa for full-time, tenure-track and tenured professor positions in Maryland, as faculty roles consistently qualify as specialty occupations requiring a graduate degree. The O-1A is an option for professors with exceptional research records. J-1 exchange visitor status is frequently used for visiting faculty, postdoctoral appointments, and short-term research roles, sponsored directly through the host institution.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters professor job listings to show only Maryland employers that have an active history of visa sponsorship, saving you from manually cross-referencing Department of Labor disclosure records. You can narrow results by institution type, city, or academic discipline. This is particularly useful for identifying opportunities at smaller Maryland colleges that sponsor less frequently than flagship research universities.
Which cities in Maryland have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
College Park and Baltimore account for the largest share of professor sponsorship activity in Maryland. College Park is anchored by the University of Maryland's flagship campus, while Baltimore hosts Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, the University of Maryland Baltimore, and Loyola University Maryland. Towson, just north of Baltimore, also contributes through Towson University's growing research programs.
Are there state-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship in Maryland?
Maryland's high concentration of federal research agencies, including NIH, FDA, and NASA Goddard, creates strong institutional partnerships that drive faculty hiring in biomedical, public health, and engineering fields. Many Maryland universities participate in federally funded research programs, which can support sponsored positions. Professors in clinical or public health fields should note that Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is one of the most active faculty sponsors in the country.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Maryland?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
