Search Professor Jobs in OregonProfessor Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
Which employers in Oregon sponsor visas for professor roles?
The University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Portland State University are the most active sponsors for professor positions in the state. Private institutions like Reed College, Willamette University, and Lewis and Clark College also sponsor faculty visas, though less frequently. Oregon Health and Science University sponsors professors in medical and health sciences fields. Sponsorship frequency generally correlates with institutional size and research funding levels.
Which visa types are most common for professor jobs in Oregon?
The H-1B is the most common visa for tenure-track and full-time professor roles in Oregon, as academic positions typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring a relevant advanced degree. The J-1 visa is widely used for visiting professors, postdoctoral researchers, and exchange faculty at Oregon's public universities. O-1 visas apply to professors with exceptional records of publication, awards, or peer recognition in their field.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Oregon?
Migrate Mate filters professor job listings by visa sponsorship status, so you can search specifically for Oregon faculty positions where employers have indicated sponsorship willingness. Searching by institution type, such as research universities or liberal arts colleges, helps narrow results to roles most likely to support H-1B or J-1 applications. Migrate Mate's filters make it practical to focus on Oregon institutions actively hiring international candidates.
Which cities in Oregon have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Eugene and Corvallis generate the highest concentration of professor sponsorship jobs, driven by the University of Oregon and Oregon State University respectively. Portland is the third major hub, with Portland State University, Oregon Health and Science University, and a cluster of smaller private colleges. Salem has Willamette University, which occasionally sponsors faculty. Rural and community college positions in Oregon rarely involve visa sponsorship.
Are there state-specific considerations for professor visa sponsorship in Oregon?
Oregon's public universities are subject to federal prevailing wage requirements under the H-1B program, meaning faculty salaries must meet Department of Labor wage levels for the relevant academic discipline and institution type. Oregon State University and the University of Oregon both operate large research programs with international hiring pipelines, which means their HR and legal teams are experienced with faculty sponsorship. Candidates in STEM and health sciences fields tend to find more active recruitment at Oregon's research institutions than those in humanities disciplines.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Oregon?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
