Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Illinois?
The H-1B is the most common visa for full-time professor positions in Illinois, as tenure-track and visiting faculty roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree. The O-1A is an option for professors with distinguished records of publications, awards, or peer recognition. J-1 exchange visitor visas are also widely used for visiting scholars and postdoctoral researchers at Illinois universities.
Which universities and institutions sponsor visas for professors in Illinois?
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Loyola University Chicago, and DePaul University are among the most active professor visa sponsors in the state. These institutions have established international faculty hiring pipelines and dedicated international faculty offices that manage H-1B and J-1 petitions regularly.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois, with listings filtered specifically for roles where employers have indicated sponsorship willingness. You can narrow results by institution type, city, and academic discipline. Illinois has a large volume of faculty openings across its research universities, medical schools, and liberal arts colleges, making it one of the more active states for international academic hiring.
Which cities in Illinois have the most professor visa sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the largest share of professor sponsorship positions in Illinois, anchored by the University of Illinois Chicago, Loyola, DePaul, and several professional schools. Urbana-Champaign is the second major hub, home to the flagship University of Illinois campus with heavy hiring across STEM, humanities, and social sciences. Evanston, just north of Chicago, houses Northwestern University and generates consistent faculty demand.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for professor visa sponsorship?
Illinois universities sponsoring H-1B professors must meet Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements for the relevant academic rank and geographic area, which are determined at the metropolitan level, meaning Chicago-area roles carry different benchmarks than Urbana-Champaign positions. Public universities in Illinois are also subject to state procurement and hiring transparency rules that can affect how quickly an international hire moves through internal approvals before an H-1B petition is filed.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
