Which universities and employers sponsor visas for professors in Mississippi?
The primary sponsors for professor roles in Mississippi are its flagship research institutions: the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi State University in Starkville, and Jackson State University in Jackson. The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg also sponsors international faculty. These universities routinely file H-1B visa and O-1 visa petitions for tenure-track and visiting professor positions across multiple disciplines.
Which visa types are most common for professor roles in Mississippi?
The H-1B visa is the most common pathway for professors in Mississippi, as university teaching and research positions qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Public universities are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file petitions year-round without entering the lottery. The O-1A is an alternative for professors with significant research recognition, publications, or awards in their field.
Which cities in Mississippi have the most professor sponsorship jobs?
Oxford, Starkville, and Jackson account for the largest share of professor sponsorship jobs in Mississippi, anchored by the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, and Jackson State University respectively. Hattiesburg is a smaller but active market through the University of Southern Mississippi. Sponsorship activity outside these four cities is limited, as professor hiring concentrates almost entirely within higher education institutions.
How to find professor visa sponsorship jobs in Mississippi?
Migrate Mate filters professor job listings in Mississippi specifically to roles where employers have a documented history of visa sponsorship, saving you the step of vetting each posting individually. Because Mississippi's sponsored professor roles are spread across several universities and disciplines, using Migrate Mate to browse by location and role type helps you identify active openings at institutions like the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, and Jackson State University.
Are there any state-specific considerations for professors seeking visa sponsorship in Mississippi?
Mississippi's public universities are designated as cap-exempt H-1B employers, which is a meaningful advantage: they can sponsor professors at any time of year rather than waiting for the April lottery window. The state's academic hiring follows standard semester timelines, with most faculty searches concluding in spring for fall start dates. Professors in STEM fields, particularly agriculture, engineering, and health sciences, tend to see the broadest sponsorship activity given Mississippi State's land-grant research mission.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored professor jobs in Mississippi?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
