Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as an Equipment Service Technician
Target degree-forward job postings
Employers must prove the role requires a specific bachelor's degree to support an H-1B petition. Look for postings that list an engineering or technical degree as required, not preferred, that distinction directly affects whether USCIS will approve the petition.
Focus on medical device and industrial OEMs
Original equipment manufacturers in medical devices, semiconductor equipment, and industrial automation sponsor Equipment Service Technicians more consistently than general contractors. These companies have dedicated immigration counsel and established LCA filing processes already in place.
Align your degree to the service domain
A mechanical engineering degree supporting HVAC equipment, or a biomedical engineering degree supporting surgical systems, creates a clear specialty occupation argument. The closer your field of study matches the equipment category, the stronger your employer's H-1B petition becomes.
Australian nationals should prioritize the E-3
The E-3 visa has no lottery, no annual cap pressure, and processes in days at Australian consulates. Equipment Service roles in engineering-heavy environments qualify as specialty occupations, making the E-3 a faster and more predictable sponsorship path than the H-1B.
Canadian and Mexican engineers should consider TN status
TN visa classification covers engineers under USMCA. If your role involves engineering judgment, diagnosing complex equipment failures, designing maintenance protocols, a TN as an engineer can apply, and it doesn't require an employer to file a petition with USCIS.
Request a detailed job description before applying
USCIS scrutinizes Equipment Service Technician petitions because the title doesn't always signal a degree-required role. Ask hiring managers early whether the posted role is structured for degree holders, this saves time and clarifies whether sponsorship is actually viable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Equipment Service Technician roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
They can, but it depends on how the role is structured. USCIS requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning the employer must demonstrate that a specific bachelor's degree is a normal minimum requirement for the role. Equipment Service Technician positions tied to complex medical, semiconductor, or industrial systems, where an engineering degree is genuinely required, have a stronger case than general field service roles.
What degree do I need for an Equipment Service Technician visa sponsorship?
Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and systems engineering are the degrees most commonly aligned with sponsored Equipment Service Technician roles. The degree field must match the equipment category, a biomedical engineering degree supports medical device service roles more cleanly than a general business degree would. USCIS will examine the connection between your degree and the specific equipment you'll service.
How do I find Equipment Service Technician jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Equipment Service Technician roles filtered specifically for visa sponsorship, so you're not sifting through postings from employers who won't sponsor. Focus on roles at companies with prior LCA filing history in your equipment category, medical device OEMs, semiconductor equipment manufacturers, and large industrial automation firms are the most consistent sponsors.
Are H-1B approval rates good for Equipment Service Technicians?
USCIS issues Requests for Evidence at higher rates for job titles that sound more vocational than professional. Equipment Service Technician petitions are more likely to receive RFEs than titles like Field Applications Engineer or Systems Engineer. Employers who have successfully sponsored this title before, and who can document degree requirements in the role's job description, see significantly better outcomes than first-time filers.
Can I get visa sponsorship as an Equipment Service Technician without a four-year degree?
Without a bachelor's degree, H-1B visa sponsorship is very difficult for this role because specialty occupation status depends on degree requirements. The three-for-one rule, where three years of relevant work experience substitutes for one year of education, can theoretically apply, but USCIS scrutinizes experience-based equivalency claims closely. TN visa classification for Canadian and Mexican nationals in engineering roles is a possible alternative if the position involves genuine engineering work.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Equipment Service Technician jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
