Target insurance carriers and TPAs first
Large insurance carriers and third-party administrators (TPAs) have established immigration programs and sponsor H-1B workers regularly. They're far more likely to have legal infrastructure in place than smaller regional insurers or independent adjusting firms.
Frame your degree as a specialty occupation match
USCIS requires your degree field to align with the role. A background in risk management, finance, business administration, or legal studies strengthens your H-1B petition. Generalist degrees without relevant coursework can trigger a Request for Evidence.
Highlight any relevant certifications prominently
Credentials like the Associate in Claims (AIC) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) signal specialized expertise to both employers and USCIS. They reinforce that the role requires professional knowledge, not just general administrative skill.
Prepare for employer questions about specialty occupation status
Some HR teams aren't sure liability claims roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations. Come prepared with DOL data showing degree requirements are standard for the title, and offer to connect them with an immigration attorney who can confirm eligibility.
Look for roles in self-insured corporations and legal departments
Fortune 500 companies with in-house claims teams and large law firms handling tort defense regularly sponsor visa workers. These employers often have immigration counsel on retainer, making the sponsorship conversation significantly easier to initiate.

Does a Liability Claims Specialist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS has approved H-1B petitions for liability claims roles when the position requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as risk management, insurance, finance, or business. The key is that the job description must show the degree is a genuine requirement, not just a preference. Employers who list 'bachelor's preferred' rather than 'required' create petition risk.
What degree do I need to get sponsored as a Liability Claims Specialist?
A bachelor's degree in risk management, insurance, finance, business administration, or a closely related field is the standard baseline. Some employers also accept degrees in legal studies or economics. If your degree is in an unrelated field, USCIS's three-for-one rule may apply: three years of directly relevant work experience can substitute for one year of formal education, though this path requires stronger documentation.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor this role?
Large insurance carriers such as those handling commercial general liability, workers' compensation, or professional liability lines are the most consistent sponsors. Self-insured corporations in manufacturing, retail, and healthcare also maintain in-house claims teams and sponsor regularly. Third-party administrators (TPAs) are another strong target. Browse Migrate Mate to filter for liability claims positions from verified sponsoring employers.
How competitive is H-1B approval for this job title?
Approval rates for business and insurance specialty occupations have faced increased USCIS scrutiny compared to STEM roles, particularly when the degree requirement isn't clearly tied to a specific field. That said, petitions supported by detailed job descriptions showing specialized analytical or legal knowledge, along with a degree match, have a strong track record. Working with an experienced immigration attorney significantly reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Can I work as a Liability Claims Specialist on an E-3 or TN visa instead of H-1B?
Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa for this role, which has no lottery and is far easier to obtain than the H-1B. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify under the TN visa if the role maps to an eligible USMCA professional category, though liability claims is not always a clean fit and requires careful review. Both alternatives avoid the H-1B lottery entirely, making them worth exploring before the April registration window.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Liability Claims Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
