Our mission is to expedite the mass adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by creating a convenient, reliable, and affordable EV charging network that delivers fast charging to everyone. EVgo’s owned and operated charging network is growing rapidly. We partner with multiple stakeholders including automakers; fleet and rideshare operators; retail hosts such as grocery stores, shopping centers, restaurants, gas stations, and more to make our vision of Electric for All a reality. The EV industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the country. Join us as we charge forward into an all-electric future. Software is an integral part in realizing this vision and we are hiring a software manager to play a leadership role shaping our future.
Position Summary:
The Senior Test Engineer is responsible for executing verification and validation testing for vehicle DC fast charging components and charging systems. This role ensures hardware and software meet defined performance, reliability, and compliance requirements prior to product release. The role spans development and validation testing at both component and system levels, including displays, low-voltage electronics, and three-phase high-voltage power electronics.
The Senior Test Engineer owns the end-to-end execution of component lifecycle testing — from defining test equipment and building test infrastructure to executing test campaigns, analyzing data, and reporting results. This role plays a critical part in ensuring product quality and deployment readiness. The role requires strong debugging instincts, curiosity, and the ability to translate ambiguous test failures into actionable engineering insight.
This is a highly hands-on role requiring significant laboratory work, hardware integration, and development of automated and manual test systems.
Responsibilities:
- Execute verification and validation testing at component, subsystem, and system levels.
- Implement test cases derived from system validation plans in collaboration with Validation Engineers.
- Design and deploy test stages including hardware setup, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems.
- Configure and operate test equipment including power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, and environmental chambers.
- Design and fabricate test fixtures and automated or manual test setups.
- Develop and maintain automated test scripts and data collection tools.
- Execute environmental, durability, electrical, and functional test campaigns.
- Analyze test results and conduct post-test reviews to communicate findings and recommendations.
- Instrument systems to capture electrical, thermal, and mechanical measurements.
- Manage test assets including hardware configuration, equipment calibration, software versions, and test documentation.
- Support root cause investigations and failure analysis during test campaigns.
- Collaborate with design, reliability, manufacturing, and supplier teams to resolve issues and improve system performance.
- Provide technical guidance to technicians supporting test execution.
- Deploy and maintain electrical integration test benches for evaluation of motors, pumps, cables, and connector systems.
Qualifications
Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
Desired Skills:
- Experience developing and executing structured test protocols.
- Hands-on experience testing hardware and software from component to system levels.
- Strong capability in hardware test setup, execution, and error-proofing.
- Proficiency with lab instrumentation including power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, function generators, and DAQ systems.
- Experience with SCPI or similar interfaces for automated test control.
- Programming experience in Python, SQL, or similar tools for automation, data analysis, and visualization.
- Experience designing test fixtures and selecting appropriate test equipment.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Willingness to travel for test integration, commissioning, or supplier support.
Compensation:
For job positions in CA, CO, and NYC, the estimated salary range for a new hire in this position is $103,400.00 USD to $129,200.00 USD. Actual salary may vary depending on job-related factors, including knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition to a competitive base salary, discretionary target cash bonus, and restricted stock units (subject to Board Approval). EVgo offers a comprehensive benefits package including health, life, and disability insurance, unbounded paid time off including parental leave, and a 401(k).

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Senior Test Engineer
Confirm the role requires a specific degree
Specialty occupation status depends on the job requiring a degree in a specific field, not just any bachelor's degree. Look for postings that specify computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering as a requirement, not a preference.
Target employers with H-1B filing history
Companies that have sponsored test engineers before are far more likely to do it again. Employers with established QA teams and SDLC infrastructure, such as large software firms and defense contractors, file H-1B petitions for this role regularly.
Highlight automation skills in your application
Employers sponsoring senior-level roles want engineers who reduce costs and scale testing. Proficiency in Selenium, Cypress, or similar frameworks signals seniority and justifies the investment in sponsorship, making you a stronger candidate for approval.
Get your LCA certified before counting on a start date
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before the H-1B petition can be submitted to USCIS. LCA certification typically takes seven business days and must be completed first, so factor this into your timeline.
Document your specialization clearly in offer letters
USCIS scrutinizes job descriptions for specialty occupation evidence. Ask your employer to specify the exact technical scope, required frameworks, and degree requirements in the offer letter and support letter, not just a generic engineering job description.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Test Engineer role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, Senior Test Engineer qualifies as a specialty occupation when the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. USCIS looks for a direct relationship between the degree field and the job duties, so employers should avoid generic job descriptions that could apply to any discipline.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor me as a Senior Test Engineer?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or information systems. A degree in an unrelated field, such as general business or communications, is unlikely to support a specialty occupation determination unless you also hold a credential in a technical discipline or have equivalent experience documented under the three-for-one rule.
How competitive is H-1B approval for test engineering roles?
Approval rates for software and quality assurance engineering roles are generally solid compared to broader H-1B categories, but USCIS does issue Requests for Evidence when job descriptions are vague or when the degree requirement is listed as a preference rather than a requirement. The strongest petitions are those where the offer letter explicitly ties the role's duties to a specific degree field.
Can I find Senior Test Engineer jobs that sponsor visas on Migrate Mate?
Yes. Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse Senior Test Engineer openings from employers who have indicated they sponsor H-1B, E-3, or other work visas. This saves time compared to applying broadly and only discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process.
Are there visa options besides H-1B for Senior Test Engineers?
Australian citizens can apply for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and is available year-round. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify under the TN visa for engineers. Those with extraordinary ability or significant industry recognition may also pursue the O-1A. Each path has different employer filing requirements, timelines, and renewal structures, so the right option depends on your citizenship and career profile.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Senior Test Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
