AI Developer Internships
Ai developer internships give university students, recent graduates, and early-career switchers hands-on project experience building and deploying machine learning models and AI systems, mentorship from working engineers and data scientists, and, at many employers, a path toward a full-time offer. Openings are concentrated across Mining & Natural Resources, with AMD, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and LOUi Consulting among the employers posting roles now.

Tips for Your AI Developer Internship Search
Apply before the fall deadline for summer roles
Large technology and enterprise employers open summer ai developer internship applications as early as August or September the year before. If you wait until spring, the most structured cohort programs are already closed. Set a reminder to check postings each fall and submit applications as soon as roles appear.
Build a GitHub portfolio before you apply
Hiring teams assessing ai developer intern candidates want something concrete to review, not just a list of coursework. Publish two or three end-to-end projects showing data preparation, model training, and results, with clear documentation. A linked, working repository gives recruiters a faster reason to advance your application than a resume alone.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach and reduces reliance on any single channel.
Practice coding screens out loud before your first interview
Ai developer intern interviews typically include a technical screen covering data structures, algorithms, and sometimes basic ML concepts. Practice solving problems verbally and explaining your reasoning as you go, since interviewers weigh how you think through a problem as much as whether you reach the correct answer. Mock sessions with peers sharpen this more than silent practice.
Target structured AI and ML internship pipelines early
Larger technology, finance, and enterprise companies run rotational or cohort-based AI internship programs specifically built to train people new to the field. These programs recruit several months ahead of the start date and fill their cohorts fast, so identify the programs that match your background and apply in the first wave of openings.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 33% of the ai developer internships listed here, so a meaningful share require you to be present at a specific location. Decide what you can actually commit to, then filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate before you start reviewing listings, so you are not sorting through roles you cannot take.
AI Developer Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an ai developer internship?
Lead with coursework and personal projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. The concrete artifact that gives recruiters something to assess is a public GitHub portfolio showing end-to-end AI or ML projects with documented code, datasets used, and results. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can an ai developer internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it is performance on real project work, team headcount at the end of your term, and how early you signal interest in returning. Position for a return offer by delivering complete, well-documented work, without counting on it as a certain outcome.
When should I apply for ai developer internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large tech and enterprise employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes opening applications in August or September. Smaller companies, startups, and co-op programs post closer to their start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly and applying as soon as roles open gives you the most options.
Are ai developer internships paid?
Most professional ai developer internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and some positions also include housing stipends or relocation support. Where an employer discloses pay, the listing will show it, so you can compare offers before deciding where to apply.
What should an ai developer internship resume include?
Lead with two or three complete, documented projects rather than work history. For each project, name the tools and frameworks used, the problem you were solving, and link to the code or deployed output on GitHub or a similar platform. Add relevant coursework in machine learning, statistics, or software engineering, and keep the resume to one page.
Are there remote ai developer internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 67% of the ai developer internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts tend to fill quickly because they attract candidates from across the country, so apply early once you find roles that fit. Use the work-type filter to see only remote or hybrid listings without sorting through on-site positions you cannot take.
What is an AI or machine learning rotational internship?
Some larger technology and enterprise companies run structured rotational AI internship programs that place new interns across two or three teams, such as model development, data engineering, and applied research, within a single term. These programs are built to train people new to the field, recruit several months before the cohort starts, and are competitive, so identify the ones that fit your background and apply in the first wave.
Can international students get ai developer internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
