AI Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ai engineer in Virginia?
There is no state-issued license required to work as an ai engineer in Virginia. The typical path is a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, data science, or electrical engineering, followed by demonstrated project experience in machine learning or AI systems. Many Virginia employers, particularly in the defense contracting sector, also require candidates to be eligible for or already hold a federal security clearance, which involves a background investigation process separate from any academic credential.
Which companies hire ai engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring ai engineers in Virginia right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, Capital One, and Deloitte, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal agencies, and major cloud infrastructure operations makes it one of the deepest markets for AI engineering talent on the East Coast.
Which Virginia cities have the most ai engineer jobs?
The cities with the most ai engineer openings in Virginia are McLean, Arlington, and Chantilly. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of defense contractors, intelligence community tenants, and AWS's data center and corporate operations, while Richmond and Hampton Roads draw demand from state government technology initiatives and naval research and logistics operations.
Are there remote ai engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 47% of ai engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves writing code, training models, and analyzing data rather than being physically on-site. The exception is roles tied to classified government programs, which typically require on-site presence at a cleared facility in Northern Virginia or another secure location.
How can I get hired as a ai engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a targeted internship or associate engineer program at one of Virginia's large defense contractors or technology firms, where structured rotations expose new graduates to real AI projects. Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos both run early-career programs based in Northern Virginia that hire candidates with strong academic projects in lieu of professional experience. Building a portfolio of end-to-end ML projects on public datasets and earning a cloud certification, such as an AWS Machine Learning Specialty credential, gives candidates a concrete edge when applying to these programs.
Where can I find and apply to ai engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to ai engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
