The Role
We’re looking for a Staff Full-Stack Engineer to lead end-to-end delivery and drive technical direction across a real-time, high-scale product surface. You’ll architect, build, and evolve systems spanning backend services, APIs and authentication systems that power Orum’s live calling platform at scale, while mentoring engineers and raising the bar for simplicity, performance, and reliability. You’ll partner closely with Product and Design—your technical judgment will directly shape the roadmap as we treat engineering, product, and design as equal partners.
The Product Platform Team
The Product Platform team sits at the center of Orum’s architecture, building the foundational systems that power every product. You’ll work on CRM integrations (Salesforce, Outreach), identity and access, and the data flows that keep customer systems accurate and in sync. The team also drives AI-powered prospect enrichment, combining internal and external data to create smarter, continuously improving prospect profiles. Your work has massive leverage, accelerating every team, enabling the platform to scale seamlessly, and unlocking AI-driven innovation by creating the reliable foundations and data flows needed to build smarter, more intelligent products across Orum.
What You’ll Do
Own complex product areas end-to-end—from discovery and design to implementation, rollout, and iteration—operating across Node/TypeScript backends, APIs and Auth systems, with React frontends.
Lead architecture and system design backend and API systems supporting real-time, high-volume workflows including data contracts, authentication and authorization models.
Author clear technical design docs, set standards for code quality, testing, performance, and observability, and ensure designs scale simply as we grow.
Collaborate cross-functionally with PM, Design, and other engineers to translate ambiguous requirements into intuitive, performant experiences; make crisp trade-offs and document decisions.
Mentor and uplevel engineers through design reviews, pairing, and feedback; model engineering excellence and foster a culture of craftsmanship and clarity.
Improve developer experience (DevEx) and reliability by influencing APIs, data contracts, testing strategies, and progressive delivery practices across teams.
Participate in on-call and help uphold operational excellence for the areas you own.
What You’ll Bring
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including demonstrated Staff-level scope (cross-team technical leadership, strategy, and delivery).
Proven track record owning products/features through the full lifecycle—from discovery to deployment and iteration.
Expertise with TypeScript/Node.js and API development (REST, WebSocket, gRPC), plus strong SQL fundamentals with an RDBMS such as PostgreSQL.
Hands-on experience implementing authentication and authorization for a production application (OAuth2, JWT, RBAC, login/session flows, token storage and refresh) in distributed systems.
Strong product mindset and communication: you simplify complexity, align stakeholders, and connect technical decisions to user and business impact.
Nice to Have
Cloud infrastructure experience with one of GCP, AWS, or Azure; familiarity with CI/CD and progressive delivery practices.
Experience in telephony, SIP softswitches (e.g., FreeSWITCH), or adjacent real-time/event-driven domains.
Familiarity with our stack: NodeJS with TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, Google Cloud Platform, and FreeSWITCH.
How We Work
Engineering, Product, and Design partner as equals; we value simplicity, clarity, and fast, iterative delivery.

Api Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a api engineer in California?
Becoming an api engineer in California does not require a state-issued license. The typical path starts with a bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, followed by building demonstrated experience through internships, open-source contributions, or a portfolio of integrated systems. California employers, particularly in the Bay Area and Los Angeles tech corridors, heavily value practical project work, GitHub presence, and proficiency with industry-standard API frameworks alongside a relevant degree.
How much do api engineers make in California?
Api engineers in California earn a median of about $174,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,060 for the lowest 10% to over $272,670 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire api engineers in California?
Employers hiring api engineers in California right now include Apple, Esri, and ORUM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's density of enterprise software, fintech, and cloud-native companies means consistent demand well beyond a single employer or sector.
Which California cities have the most api engineer jobs?
San Francisco, Cupertino, and Mountain View have the most api engineer openings in California. San Francisco and San Jose lead because of the Bay Area's concentration of cloud, SaaS, and fintech headquarters, while Los Angeles drives volume through its growing tech and entertainment-technology sector, where streaming platforms and digital media companies rely heavily on API-first architectures.
Are there remote api engineer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of api engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the inherently desk-based, collaborative nature of API development work. Roles focused on API design, documentation, and developer relations tend to be the most fully remote, while positions requiring coordination with on-site infrastructure teams are more likely to carry a hybrid requirement.
How can I get hired as a api engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an associate or junior software engineer role at a California-based company that exposes you to API integration work, then specializing from within. Large California employers like Salesforce and ServiceNow run new-grad programs where early-career engineers rotate through platform and integration teams. Building a portfolio of personal or open-source API projects and earning a vendor certification in a platform like AWS or Google Cloud gives candidates a concrete edge in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to api engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to api engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across companies of all sizes. Find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
