Artificial Intelligence Scientist Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a artificial intelligence scientist in New Jersey?
A graduate degree, typically a master's or PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, or a closely related field, is the standard entry point for artificial intelligence scientist roles in New Jersey. There is no state-issued license for this occupation in New Jersey. Hiring in the state, particularly in Princeton's pharmaceutical corridor and Newark's financial technology sector, emphasizes published research, a strong portfolio of applied ML projects, and demonstrated expertise in areas like NLP or computer vision.
How much do artificial intelligence scientists make in New Jersey?
Artificial intelligence scientists in New Jersey earn a median of about $140,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $85,780 for the lowest 10% to over $209,850 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire artificial intelligence scientists in New Jersey?
Employers hiring artificial intelligence scientists in New Jersey right now include JPMorganChase, Citi, and Innodata, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's concentration of pharmaceutical headquarters, global financial firms, and defense contractors makes it one of the more diverse hiring markets for this role in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Which New Jersey cities have the most artificial intelligence scientist jobs?
Jersey City, Princeton, and Ridgefield Park have the most artificial intelligence scientist openings in New Jersey. Princeton draws heavily from its pharmaceutical and research institution presence, while Newark benefits from proximity to major financial and tech employers, and Parsippany serves as a hub for several large corporate headquarters with active AI research teams.
Are there remote artificial intelligence scientist jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 40% of artificial intelligence scientist openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on modeling, research, and code rather than physical presence. Roles focused on research, model development, and data analysis tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while positions requiring lab access or close collaboration with hardware teams are more likely to be on-site.
How can I get hired as a artificial intelligence scientist in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a research internship or associate scientist role, which large New Jersey pharmaceutical employers like Johnson and Johnson and Merck offer to recent graduates. Building a strong portfolio of open-source projects or Kaggle competition results helps candidates without industry experience stand out. Lateral moves from roles like data analyst, machine learning engineer, or quantitative researcher are common stepping stones, especially at New Jersey financial services and insurance firms seeking applied AI capability.
