Description
This position will specialize in Epilepsy and EEG’s and will have responsibilities in administration, teaching, research and medical service as they pertain to the general mission of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the specific needs of the Department of Neurology. Responsibilities shall include direct patient care, teaching and work rounds, lectures, protocol development and staff education.
Examples of Duties
Teaching 10%
- Presentation of lectures, seminars, conferences and rounds for residents and students (Years II, III and IV).
- Participate in Neurology grand rounds (attend weekly, present periodically).
- Participate in the basic science and other didactic curricula for neurology residents.
- Conduct clinical (bedside and otherwise) teaching of neurology and other house staff and medical students in the outpatient clinic and during rounds on inpatient service at assigned hospital(s).

Develop and maintain a professional practice in accordance with departmental policy and the University practice plan (SIU Healthcare).
- Conduct 7 half-days of outpatient clinics per week including supervision of resident clinic and access for general neurology with a reduced schedule when staffing the inpatient service.
- Interpret EEGs and long-term monitoring EEGs.
- Participate in evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery, including noninvasive and invasive video EEG monitoring and electrocorticography.
- Supervise and interpret intra-operative monitoring studies.
- Provide inpatient care through consultations and, when appropriate, principal care as part of weekly rotations on the neurology inpatient service at assigned hospital(s).
- Provide outreach outpatient clinics as needed.
- Serve on university, departmental and hospital committees as needed.
- Participate in scheduled meetings as a member of the hospital staff at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield Memorial Hospital and other partners as needed.
- (Time devoted to research will be raised or lowered depending on a faculty member’s productivity and career goals. Time in research can/will be moved to teaching or clinical service, accordingly.)
- Participate in clinical trials of new therapies for neurologic disease.
- Participate in multi-center clinical trials of new therapies for epilepsy disorders.
- Publish research in peer reviewed journals and in other suitable scientific media.
- Present at regional, national and international scientific meetings.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
- Board certified or board eligible in neurology.
- Board certified or board eligible in epilepsy.
- At least one year of postdoctoral training or equivalent job experience in Epilepsy and EEG.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have knowledge and practical skills in the diagnosis and care of patients with epilepsy and will have specialized expertise for interpreting EEGs, long-term monitoring EEGs and intra-operative monitoring.
