Tips for Your Assistant Professor Job Search
Tailor your cover letter to the department
Generic cover letters fail in academic hiring. Read the department's recent publications and research priorities, then name specific faculty whose work complements yours. Search committees notice when a letter could have been sent to any institution.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists assistant professor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Format your CV for an academic audience
A curriculum vitae for a faculty position differs from a resume. List publications, conference presentations, teaching experience, and grants separately. Omit a summary section and keep formatting minimal so committee members can scan quickly.
Request letters of recommendation strategically
Committees expect three letters, at least one from a dissertation advisor or senior mentor. Ask recommenders six to eight weeks before deadlines and send them the full job ad so their letters speak directly to the position's teaching and research expectations.
Prepare a teaching demonstration before the campus visit
Most campus interviews include a 50- to 75-minute teaching demo to a mixed audience of faculty and undergraduates. Practice delivering the lesson to non-specialists, and build in two minutes of student interaction so evaluators can see how you handle live questions.
Negotiate startup funds and course load separately
When an offer arrives, negotiate lab startup funds, travel funding, and first-year course reductions as line items, not as a package. Each element has a different budget source, and departments that cannot move on salary often have more flexibility on research support.
Assistant Professor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most assistant professors?
The companies hiring the most assistant professors right now include University of Florida, University of Kentucky, and Indiana University, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are distributed across research universities, regional colleges, and community college systems.
How many assistant professor jobs are remote?
About 2% of assistant professor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with online teaching roles and distance-education program faculty positions making up the largest portion of remote-eligible listings. Traditional tenure-track positions at residential institutions remain almost entirely on-campus.
How do you become an assistant professor?
Start by completing a doctoral degree in your field, since most tenure-track positions require a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree. Build a publication record during your graduate training and secure teaching experience through assistantships or adjunct appointments. After defending your dissertation, apply during the fall academic hiring cycle, which typically opens several months before the intended start date.
Can you get an assistant professor job with little experience?
Yes, but the definition of experience differs from most careers. Committees prioritize peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and a clear research agenda over years of industry work. Strong teaching evaluations from graduate courses or adjunct roles carry real weight. Visiting assistant professor positions are a common entry point that builds your record before a tenure-track application.
What does the assistant professor interview process look like?
Academic hiring typically runs in two stages. The first is a phone or video screening with a search committee, lasting about 30 minutes and focusing on your research trajectory and teaching philosophy. Finalists then attend a two-day campus visit that includes a research talk, a teaching demonstration, individual meetings with faculty and administrators, and a presentation to graduate students before the committee deliberates.
Where can I find and apply to assistant professor jobs?
You can find and apply to assistant professor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from colleges and universities across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your field and institution type, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
