Tips for Your Adjunct Instructor Job Search
Tailor your CV to each department
Departments read CVs differently than corporate hiring teams do. Lead with your teaching history, list courses by exact title, and match your listed specializations to the specific courses named in the job posting. Generic academic CVs rarely advance.
Gather syllabi and course materials now
Many adjunct postings ask for a sample syllabus or teaching philosophy statement before the first interview. Draft these for the two or three courses you most want to teach so you can attach them the moment a listing requests them.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists adjunct instructor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by modality and load
Adjunct postings vary widely between fully online asynchronous sections, hybrid cohorts, and in-person courses with strict schedule requirements. Read each listing for credit-hour load and delivery format before applying to avoid accepting a role that conflicts with other commitments.
Prepare a teaching demonstration you can adapt
Most on-campus adjunct interviews include a live or recorded teaching demonstration of fifteen to twenty minutes. Prepare one that can be trimmed or extended, and practice delivering it to a non-specialist audience in case the committee includes administrators.
Negotiate course assignments before you accept
Pay and benefits for adjuncts are rarely flexible, but course assignments often are. Before signing a contract, ask whether the sections offered align with your expertise and whether additional sections might open mid-semester, which can affect your total compensation.
Adjunct Instructor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most adjunct instructors?
The companies hiring the most adjunct instructors right now include Virginia Community College System, Ivy Tech Community College, and University of Central Oklahoma, with the largest share of openings in New York, Texas, and Virginia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community colleges and regional universities consistently account for a large portion of postings year-round.
How many adjunct instructor jobs are remote?
About 8% of adjunct instructor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the strong demand for online course delivery across higher education. Subjects taught asynchronously, such as business writing, introductory psychology, and computer applications, tend to have the highest share of fully remote sections.
How do you become an adjunct instructor?
Earning a master's degree in your subject area is the standard first step, since most institutions require graduate-level credentials for the courses you'll teach. From there, build a record of classroom or training experience through teaching assistantships, corporate training, or guest lecturing. Assembling a CV, a teaching philosophy statement, and at least one sample syllabus makes your application ready to submit quickly when openings appear.
Can you get hired as an adjunct instructor with little teaching experience?
Yes, especially in professional and technical fields where deep industry experience can substitute for a long classroom record. Programs in nursing, cybersecurity, accounting, and skilled trades regularly hire practitioners who have strong credentials but limited formal teaching backgrounds. Highlighting any training, mentoring, or workshop facilitation you've done, even outside a classroom, helps bridge the gap on your application.
What does the adjunct instructor interview process look like?
Most adjunct hiring moves through a department chair or program coordinator rather than a full search committee, so the process is often shorter than tenure-track searches. Expect an initial phone or video screening focused on your subject expertise and availability, followed by a request for a teaching demonstration or sample syllabus. Some institutions extend an offer after a single round, while others add a brief in-person meeting with faculty before finalizing.
Where can I find and apply to adjunct instructor jobs?
You can find and apply to adjunct instructor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subject area, availability, and preferred modality, then apply directly to each position that fits.
