- State licensure or certification as a school counselor or professional counselor
- Experience with student advising caseloads in a K-12 or postsecondary setting

Tips for Your Education Counselor Job Search
Tailor your resume to each setting
A K-12 school counseling resume should highlight caseload size, MTSS or RTI experience, and crisis intervention. A higher-ed advising resume should lead with student retention outcomes and advising software like EAB Navigate or Salesforce. Matching your resume to the institution type gets you past the first screen.
List your licensure prominently and correctly
Hiring managers scan for state licensure early. Write out your credential in full, 'Licensed Professional School Counselor (LPSC), Virginia, expires 2027', rather than burying it in a summary. Abbreviations alone are easy to overlook and delay callbacks.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists education counselor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target job postings by student population served
Filter openings by the population the role serves, first-generation college students, adult learners, students with disabilities, or English language learners. Your experience with a specific population is your strongest differentiator, so lead with it in your cover letter.
Prepare scenario-based interview answers
Education counselor interviews almost always include a student case scenario: describe how you would support a student in academic crisis or a family navigating financial aid. Prepare two or three concrete examples from your experience before the interview, not during it.
Negotiate your professional development budget
Salary bands for school and college counselors are often set by contract or step schedule and have little flex. What you can negotiate is your conference attendance budget, tuition reimbursement, and supervision hours toward licensure renewal. Ask about these before you accept.
Education Counselor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most education counselors?
The companies hiring the most education counselors right now include Strategic Resources, Keiser University, and Newark Board of Education, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and New Jersey, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. School districts, community colleges, and college access nonprofits consistently account for the largest share of postings.
How many education counselor jobs are remote?
About 9% of education counselor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the highest concentration in virtual school programs, online colleges, and college access nonprofits that serve students statewide. Roles tied to in-person student services, such as K-12 school counselors, are almost always on-site.
How do you become an education counselor?
You typically need a master's degree in school counseling or a related counseling field, followed by a supervised practicum or internship of several hundred hours. After graduating, you apply for your state's counseling license or school counselor credential, which requires passing a licensure exam. Some states also require a background check and ongoing continuing education to maintain your credential.
How do you get hired as an education counselor with little or no experience?
Your best entry points are graduate practicum placements, AmeriCorps college access programs, and paraprofessional roles such as academic coach or college advisor assistant. These positions give you documented caseload hours and measurable student outcomes to put on your resume. Highlight any advising or case management you did during your graduate internship, even if the role was unpaid, since hiring managers in this field expect to see supervised hours.
What does the education counselor interview process look like?
Most education counselor interviews include a phone screen with HR, a panel interview with department leaders and sometimes a faculty or student representative, and at least one scenario-based question where you walk through how you would handle a specific student situation. Some employers add a writing sample or ask you to review a mock student file. The full process typically runs two to four rounds from application to offer.
Where can I find and apply to education counselor jobs?
You can find and apply to education counselor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search for roles that match your experience level, setting, and specialization, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
