Tips for Your Adjunct Professor Job Search
Tailor your CV to each department
Adjunct postings list specific courses, not just subject areas. Mirror the exact course titles from the posting in your CV's teaching experience section so hiring coordinators can immediately match your background to their need.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists adjunct professor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Build a concise teaching portfolio
Include a one-page teaching philosophy, two or three sample syllabi, and at least one set of strong student evaluations. Departments often shortlist candidates who attach these documents before they are requested.
Target departments with enrollment pressure
High-enrollment programs in nursing, business, and general education consistently need adjunct coverage. Search postings that mention 'immediate start' or 'spring semester need', those signal a department filling a gap quickly, which works in your favor.
Prepare for a demo lesson request
Many adjunct interviews include a 10-to-20-minute teaching demonstration rather than a traditional question-and-answer format. Choose a topic from the course you are applying to teach and structure the demo as if students are already enrolled.
Negotiate for multi-section contracts
When an offer comes in, ask whether additional sections of the same course are available for the same term. Departments often have a second section to fill and will assign it to the same instructor to reduce onboarding overhead.
Adjunct Professor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most adjunct professors?
The companies hiring the most adjunct professors right now include Bentley University, Long Island University, and Oklahoma State University, with the largest share of openings in New York, Massachusetts, and Oklahoma, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to be highest in the weeks before a new academic term begins.
How many adjunct professor jobs are remote?
About 8% of adjunct professor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting sustained demand for online instruction since the expansion of distance learning. Fully online sections are most common in general education, business, and healthcare programs that were already delivered asynchronously before broader remote adoption.
How do you become an adjunct professor?
You typically need a master's degree in the subject you want to teach, though a doctorate is required at four-year universities for most disciplines. Build a teaching portfolio with sample syllabi and a teaching philosophy statement, then apply directly to departments that are actively recruiting for upcoming terms. Starting at community colleges is a practical entry point because they hire more adjuncts per term than most universities.
Can you get hired as an adjunct professor with little teaching experience?
Yes, many departments will hire candidates with strong professional or industry experience in place of formal classroom experience, particularly in applied fields like business, nursing, information technology, and criminal justice. Framing your resume around outcomes you produced in your field, rather than academic credentials alone, helps departments see how your expertise translates to instruction. A willingness to teach introductory sections also improves your chances when a department is filling entry-level courses.
What does the adjunct professor interview process look like?
Most adjunct interviews begin with a brief phone or video screen with a department chair or academic dean, followed by a short in-person or virtual interview focused on your teaching approach and course content knowledge. Many departments then ask for a teaching demonstration of roughly fifteen to twenty minutes. The process moves faster than full-time faculty hiring and can conclude within two to three weeks of application.
Where can I find and apply to adjunct professor jobs?
You can find and apply to adjunct professor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from colleges and universities across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subject area and schedule, then apply directly to each position that fits.
