Assistant Professor Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an assistant professor job in Houston?
Houston's strongest demand for assistant professors sits in health sciences, petroleum and energy engineering, and business disciplines, driven by the Texas Medical Center complex and the city's major research universities. Candidates who pair teaching experience with active research output and publications stand out most. Attending discipline-specific conferences, building connections with Houston-area department chairs, and applying directly through institution hiring portals gives you a real edge in this competitive local market.
Which companies hire assistant professors in Houston?
Houston assistant professor roles are posted by Baylor College of Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and University of Houston and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's hiring base includes large research universities, medical school academic departments, community college systems, and private liberal arts institutions, reflecting the city's unusually deep higher-education infrastructure.
Are there remote assistant professor jobs in Houston?
Yes, but with significant limits, since most assistant professor roles require on-campus teaching, lab supervision, and committee participation. About 7% of assistant professor openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, concentrated mainly in online-degree programs and continuing education divisions. Fully remote teaching roles exist but tend to appear in business, public administration, and certain social science departments rather than lab-intensive fields.
How can I get an assistant professor job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is an adjunct or visiting instructor position, which several community colleges and universities in the Greater Houston area use as a pipeline to full-time hires. Lectureship roles at institutions like the University of Houston system or Houston Community College let you build a local teaching record quickly. Having a completed or near-complete doctorate, even a strong ABD status, and a clear research agenda is what converts these bridge roles into tenure-track offers locally.
Which industries hire the most assistant professors in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most assistant professors in Houston are Education and Healthcare & Medical Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's outsized medical center, its dominance in energy-related engineering research, and its expanding business school ecosystem drive unusually concentrated academic hiring compared to similarly sized U.S. cities.
