Library Media Specialist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a library media specialist in Texas?
To become a library media specialist in Texas, you must hold a Texas Education Agency school librarian certificate, which requires a master's degree in library science or a related field from an accredited program and completion of a state-approved educator preparation program. Candidates also pass the TExES School Librarian certification exam. Those working in public libraries outside K-12 settings typically need an ALA-accredited master's degree but may not require TEA certification.
How much do library media specialists make in Texas?
Library media specialists in Texas earn a median of about $71,860 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $49,240 for the lowest 10% to over $100,790 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire library media specialists in Texas?
Employers hiring library media specialists in Texas right now include Spring Independent School District, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large urban school districts and growing public library networks in cities like Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth generate the steadiest volume of open positions throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most library media specialist jobs?
Houston and Spring have the most library media specialist openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth lead because their massive independent school districts and regional library systems require large specialist staffs, while San Antonio's fast-growing school enrollment and the University of Texas at San Antonio drive demand in the south Texas metro.
Are there remote library media specialist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of library media specialist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects the hands-on nature of managing physical collections, staffing library facilities, and providing in-person instruction. The parts of the role most likely to be handled remotely include curriculum planning, cataloging support, and virtual information literacy instruction for distance-learning programs.
How can I get hired as a library media specialist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a library aide, library clerk, or instructional technology assistant position within a Texas public school district while completing an ALA-accredited master's program. Large Texas districts including Houston ISD and Austin ISD regularly post paraprofessional library roles that do not require certification and often lead directly into specialist positions. Building a portfolio of digital literacy lessons and completing your TEA educator preparation program concurrently gives candidates a clear advantage when specialist openings arise.
Where can I find and apply to library media specialist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to library media specialist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across school districts, public library systems, and higher education institutions. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly to each one.
