High School Teacher Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a high school teacher in Texas?
To become a high school teacher in Texas, you must earn a bachelor's degree and obtain a Texas educator certification through the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Certification requires passing the appropriate TExES exams for your subject area and grade band. Candidates who did not complete a traditional teacher preparation program can pursue certification through a state-approved alternative certification program. Once certified, you apply directly to school districts or charter networks through their posted openings.
How much do high school teachers make in Texas?
High school teachers in Texas earn a median of about $63,590 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,410 for the lowest 10% to over $78,020 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire high school teachers in Texas?
Employers hiring high school teachers in Texas right now include Austin Independent School District, Dallas Independent School District, and Midland Independent School District, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large urban independent school districts and statewide charter networks consistently post the highest volume of openings, particularly in STEM, special education, and bilingual instruction.
Which Texas cities have the most high school teacher jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Midland have the most high school teacher openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because their independent school districts are among the largest in the country by enrollment, while San Antonio's concentration of Title I schools and growing charter networks drives steady demand there as well.
Are there remote high school teacher jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of high school teacher openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the largely in-person nature of secondary classroom instruction. The roles most likely to be remote are virtual academy positions, online credit-recovery courses, or curriculum and instructional coaching roles that do not require daily classroom presence.
How can I get hired as a high school teacher in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a Texas-approved alternative certification program, which allows career changers and new graduates to teach while earning full certification. Large Texas charter networks such as IDEA Public Schools, KIPP Texas, and YES Prep run structured residency and new-teacher induction programs designed for candidates without classroom experience. Applying as a long-term substitute or instructional aide within a district is another common stepping stone. A completed TExES exam and a strong student-teaching or tutoring portfolio give inexperienced candidates a competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to high school teacher jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to high school teacher jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from districts and schools across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your certification area and preferred location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
