High School Teacher Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a high school teacher in New York?
To become a high school teacher in New York, you must earn a teaching certificate through the New York State Education Department's Office of Teaching Initiatives. The path requires completing an approved teacher preparation program, passing the required New York State Teacher Certification Examinations including the edTPA performance assessment, and applying for an Initial Certificate. After several years of teaching and a master's degree, teachers advance to the Professional Certificate.
How much do high school teachers make in New York?
High school teachers in New York earn a median of about $97,070 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,070 for the lowest 10% to over $136,450 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire high school teachers in New York?
Employers hiring high school teachers in New York right now include Bright Horizons Family Solutions, The Child Center of NY, and Inwood Academy for Leadership, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's scale means postings regularly come from both large public district systems and growing charter networks operating across the five boroughs and upstate cities.
Which New York cities have the most high school teacher jobs?
The cities with the most high school teacher openings in New York are New York, Queens, and Brooklyn. New York City dominates by volume because the city's Department of Education is one of the largest public school systems in the country, while secondary markets like Buffalo and Yonkers reflect the size of their own urban districts and the density of charter and parochial schools in each area.
Are there remote high school teacher jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. High school teaching is fundamentally a classroom-based role, so most positions require in-person instruction. About 4% of high school teacher openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that do exist are mostly in online charter schools or credit-recovery and adult education programs that operate virtual formats.
How can I get hired as a high school teacher in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a position while completing a student teaching placement, since New York City Department of Education and many upstate districts actively recruit candidates who are finishing approved preparation programs. Provisional certificates allow you to teach while completing requirements. New York City's NYC Teaching Fellows and Teaching Opportunity Corps programs are designed specifically for career changers and new graduates entering high-need schools, and candidates with a background as a paraprofessional or substitute teacher already inside a district have a strong advantage when full-time openings arise.
Where can I find and apply to high school teacher jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to high school teacher jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York districts, charter networks, and private schools. Find a role that fits and apply directly to the employer.
