Tips for Your High School Teacher Job Search
Tailor your resume to state standards
List your state teaching license, endorsement areas, and the grade bands you're certified for. Hiring managers scan for exact certification matches, so burying those details in a paragraph will cost you interviews even when you're fully qualified.
Document classroom results concretely
Replace vague phrases like 'improved student outcomes' with specific examples: a course you redesigned, an intervention strategy you piloted, or a club you launched. Principals want evidence you've moved students forward, not a list of responsibilities.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists high school teacher openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target districts during hiring season
Most districts post openings between February and May for fall starts. Filter your search to postings from the current quarter and prioritize those with active application windows, since positions in high-need subjects like math and special education often close fast.
Prepare a teaching demonstration you own
Many high school interviews include a live or recorded lesson. Build a 15-minute demo lesson in your subject area that you've actually taught before, not a rehearsed script. Panels respond to teachers who clearly know how their students responded to the material.
Negotiate beyond base salary at offer
Ask about lane placement on the salary schedule based on graduate credits or prior experience, since a wrong placement can cost you thousands annually. Also confirm prep periods, extracurricular stipends, and professional development funding before you sign.
High School Teacher Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most high school teachers?
The companies hiring the most high school teachers right now include Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Austin Independent School District, and Phoenix Union High School District, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Arizona, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. High-need subjects like math, science, and special education tend to drive the highest volume of postings across these employers.
How many high school teacher jobs are remote?
About 1% of high school teacher openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than in most other professional fields because most instruction happens in person. The sub-areas most likely to include remote options are online credit recovery programs, virtual charter schools, and curriculum development or instructional coaching roles attached to district central offices.
How do you become a high school teacher?
You need a bachelor's degree, completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program, and a passing score on your state's required licensure exams, which typically cover subject-matter knowledge and pedagogy. After student teaching, you apply for your initial teaching certificate through your state's department of education. Some states offer alternative certification routes for career changers who already hold a degree in a high-need subject.
Can you get hired as a high school teacher with little experience?
Yes, districts hire first-year teachers every year, especially in high-need subjects like math, special education, and sciences. Completing your student teaching placement at a school similar to the one you're applying to strengthens your application significantly. Substituting in a district before applying full-time also gives you a verifiable classroom record and makes your name familiar to principals who are filling vacancies.
What does the high school teacher interview process look like?
Most high school teacher interviews begin with a phone or video screening with an HR coordinator, followed by an in-person panel interview with the principal, department chair, and sometimes a teacher representative. Many schools also ask candidates to teach a short demonstration lesson to a real or mock class. Final rounds often include a tour of the building and an informal conversation with the department team before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to high school teacher jobs?
You can find and apply to high school teacher jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from school districts, charter networks, and private schools across the United States. Find roles that match your certification area and grade level, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
