Tips for Your Elementary School Teacher Job Search
Tailor your resume to grade bands
Districts separate K-2 and 3-5 openings more often than you'd expect. Highlight the specific grade levels you've taught and name any looping or multi-grade experience, because hiring committees match resumes to their exact vacancy before reading further.
List every endorsement on your license
Bilingual, special education, ESL, and reading specialist endorsements each expand the pool of jobs you qualify for. Pull your state teaching license and copy every endorsement exactly as listed, since applicant tracking systems screen for those specific credential terms.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists elementary school teacher openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Search by district enrollment size
Large urban districts hire in waves after budget approvals in spring, while smaller rural districts post single vacancies year-round. Knowing which cycle a district runs helps you time your application instead of arriving weeks after the posting closed.
Prepare a portfolio with student work samples
Many elementary principal interviews ask you to walk through a unit or a reading intervention. Bring annotated student writing samples or math data that show how you adjusted instruction after assessing where kids were, not just what you planned to teach.
Negotiate your placement on the salary schedule
Most districts have a salary schedule with steps for experience, but they don't always volunteer credit for all of yours. Before you sign, ask human resources which prior years of service qualify and whether graduate credits above your degree bump you to a higher lane.
Elementary School Teacher Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most elementary school teachers?
The companies hiring the most elementary school teachers right now include Spring Independent School District, Glendale Elementary School District No. 40, and Austin Independent School District, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Arizona, and Colorado, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Charter networks and large urban public districts tend to drive the highest volume of postings throughout the hiring season.
How many elementary school teacher jobs are remote?
About 1% of elementary school teacher openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low compared to most professional fields. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote arrangements are online charter schools, virtual tutoring programs, and curriculum development or instructional coaching roles that do not require daily in-classroom presence.
How do you become an elementary school teacher?
You need a bachelor's degree, completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program, and a passing score on your state's required licensure exams, which typically include a basic skills test and a subject-area assessment. After student teaching, you apply for your state teaching certificate through your state's department of education. Some states offer alternative certification routes for career changers who already hold a degree in another field.
How do you get hired as an elementary school teacher with little or no experience?
Student teaching placements and paraprofessional roles in a school are the two fastest ways to build classroom experience that principals recognize. Substitute teaching in the district you want to work in gets your name known before a vacancy opens. Completing endorsements in high-need areas like special education or bilingual education also makes you competitive even when your classroom hours are limited.
What does the elementary school teacher interview process look like?
Most districts start with a phone or video screen, then invite finalists for an in-person panel interview with a principal, an assistant principal, and often a grade-level teacher. Panels typically ask structured behavioral questions about classroom management and differentiation, and many ask you to teach a short demonstration lesson to a live or simulated group of students. Reference checks and a background clearance follow before an offer is extended.
