Clinical Assistant Professor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical assistant professor in New York?
To become a clinical assistant professor in New York, you typically need an advanced or terminal degree in your clinical field and an active New York State professional license issued by the New York State Education Department through the relevant licensing board, such as the Board of Nursing or the Board of Medicine. Most positions also require documented clinical practice experience. Candidates strengthen their applications by accumulating teaching or preceptorship hours before applying to faculty roles.
Which companies hire clinical assistant professors in New York?
Companies currently hiring clinical assistant professors in New York include University at Buffalo, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and University of Rochester, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's dense concentration of academic medical centers and research universities means the largest and most consistent hirers are major health system affiliates with accredited professional schools.
Which New York cities have the most clinical assistant professor jobs?
Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester have the most clinical assistant professor openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its exceptional density of academic medical centers, nursing schools, and professional programs, while Buffalo and Rochester draw volume from anchor institutions like the University at Buffalo and the University of Rochester, which run large health sciences colleges.
Are there remote clinical assistant professor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Clinical assistant professor roles are inherently hands-on, requiring direct supervision of students in clinical settings, simulation labs, or patient care environments. About 0% of clinical assistant professor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those tend to be in didactic, curriculum design, or online program coordination rather than direct clinical instruction.
How can I get hired as a clinical assistant professor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is transitioning from a strong clinical practice background into a part-time or adjunct faculty role before pursuing a full-time appointment. Large New York health systems affiliated with universities, such as those in the SUNY or CUNY networks, regularly bring in clinical preceptors and lab instructors with limited prior teaching experience. Earning a New York State license and completing a graduate teaching practicum or faculty preparation certificate substantially improves candidacy for these entry-level faculty openings.
