Tips for Your Adjunct Faculty Job Search
Tailor your CV to each department
Adjunct postings often list a specific course or course cluster, not just a subject area. Mirror the exact course names from the posting in your CV's teaching experience section so hiring committees see an immediate match without reading between the lines.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists adjunct faculty openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a focused teaching portfolio
Most adjunct searches expect a portfolio, but reviewers have limited time. Lead with a one-page teaching philosophy, two sample syllabi, and one set of student evaluations. Cut anything that doesn't directly support the courses listed in the job posting.
Contact department chairs before applying
Adjunct hiring is often informal. A brief email to the department chair introducing your credentials and noting the specific course you'd like to teach can move your application from the pool to the shortlist before the official deadline passes.
Prepare for a teaching demonstration
Many adjunct interviews include a 15-to-20-minute sample lesson to a live audience. Choose a topic from the course syllabus, not your personal research, and rehearse for an introductory undergraduate audience even if the role is upper division.
Negotiate course load before accepting
Adjunct contracts are often issued per course with no guaranteed renewal. Ask during the offer stage how many sections are realistically available per semester and whether multi-semester agreements are possible, so you can plan your workload accurately.
Adjunct Faculty Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most adjunct facultys?
The companies hiring the most adjunct facultys right now include Virginia Community College System, Ivy Tech Community College, and University of San Francisco, with the largest share of openings in New York, Virginia, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings are concentrated at community colleges and large public university systems.
How many adjunct faculty jobs are remote?
About 9% of adjunct faculty openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with online-only roles making up the largest share. Courses in writing, business, and general education tend to have the highest concentration of fully remote sections, while lab-based and clinical courses almost always require on-site instruction.
How do you become a adjunct faculty?
Earn at least a master's degree in the subject you want to teach, since most colleges require 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline at minimum. Build a teaching portfolio with a philosophy statement and sample syllabi. Then apply directly to departments that offer courses in your field, highlighting any prior tutoring, training, or instruction experience you already have.
How do you get hired as a adjunct faculty with little or no experience?
Focus on departments where your professional background substitutes for classroom experience, such as business, nursing, or computer science programs that value industry credentials. Offer to guest lecture for a full-time faculty member first to build a reference and get familiar with the college's learning management system before a formal application.
What does the adjunct faculty interview process look like?
Most adjunct searches start with a brief phone or video screening with a department coordinator, followed by an interview with the department chair or a small committee. A teaching demonstration is common, where you present a short lesson on an assigned topic. Some institutions also review your syllabi and ask how you'd handle specific classroom scenarios before making an offer.
Where can I find and apply to adjunct faculty jobs?
You can find and apply to adjunct faculty jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from colleges and universities across the United States. Search for roles that match your subject area and availability, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
