School Social Worker Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a school social worker in New York?
You must earn a Master of Social Work degree from a CSWE-accredited program and obtain licensure through the New York State Education Department. Most school-based positions require either the Licensed Master Social Worker or Licensed Clinical Social Worker credential, issued by the NYSED Office of the Professions. Many districts also require a New York State School Social Worker certificate, which involves supervised hours and a background clearance through NYSED.
Which companies hire school social workers in New York?
Employers hiring school social workers in New York right now include Sun River Health, Mountain Lake Academy, and NYC Health + Hospitals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's scale of public and charter school systems, combined with a dense network of nonprofit community-based organizations, makes it one of the broadest employer landscapes for this role in the country.
Which New York cities have the most school social worker jobs?
The cities with the most school social worker openings in New York are Spring Valley, Lake Placid, and New York. New York City dominates by volume given the sheer size of its public school system, while Buffalo and Yonkers reflect strong demand from large urban districts with high concentrations of students receiving special education and mental health services.
Are there remote school social worker jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. School social work is inherently on-site, requiring direct student contact, family meetings, and coordination with teachers and administrators in person. About 0% of school social worker openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that exist typically involve supervisory, policy, or telehealth-adjacent functions rather than direct student caseloads.
How can I get hired as a school social worker in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your MSW field placement within a New York City Department of Education school, which frequently converts strong interns into full-time hires. Nonprofit providers such as Safe Horizon and Children's Aid also run associate-level and new-graduate positions that serve school-based programs. Starting in a school aide, family advocate, or crisis intervention role at a New York district while completing licensure hours is a proven lateral move into the credentialed position.
