Admissions Counselor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a admissions counselor in New York?
Admissions counselor roles in New York do not require a state-issued license, but a bachelor's degree is the standard minimum for entry into the field. Most New York colleges and universities expect candidates to have experience in student services, advising, or recruitment, and many prefer applicants who hold a master's degree for senior roles. Familiarity with New York's public university system and its application processes is a concrete advantage when applying to CUNY or SUNY institutions.
Which companies hire admissions counselors in New York?
Employers hiring admissions counselors in New York right now include D'Youville University, Management & Training Corporation, and The New School, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's density of private universities, medical schools, and large public systems like CUNY and SUNY means steady year-round demand across institutional types.
Which New York cities have the most admissions counselor jobs?
Buffalo, New York State, and Bronx have the most admissions counselor openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its unmatched concentration of private universities, medical schools, and corporate training programs, while Albany's activity reflects SUNY system headquarters and state agency roles, and Buffalo draws from UB and a cluster of regional colleges anchoring that market.
Are there remote admissions counselor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in fully desk-based fields, since admissions work often involves campus tours, recruitment travel, and in-person interviews. About 50% of admissions counselor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the remote portion concentrated in roles focused on virtual recruitment, online program enrollment, and graduate admissions outreach.
How can I get hired as a admissions counselor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate assistant or admissions associate role at a CUNY or SUNY campus, where positions are regularly posted for candidates with a bachelor's degree and no prior admissions experience. Lateral moves from academic advising, financial aid counseling, or student affairs coordinators are common and well recognized by New York hiring managers. Building familiarity with Slate or a similar CRM, and completing any NACAC professional development coursework, strengthens an application considerably for competitive New York City institutional roles.
Where can I find and apply to admissions counselor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to admissions counselor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and target location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
