How do you become an instructor in New York?
The path depends on the setting. For K-12 public schools, the New York State Education Department requires a state-issued teaching certificate, which involves completing an approved teacher preparation program and passing the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations. For higher education adjunct or full-time roles, a master's or doctoral degree in the subject area is the standard requirement. Corporate and workforce training instructors typically need subject-matter expertise plus a portfolio of curriculum or facilitation experience rather than a state license.
Which companies hire instructors in New York?

New York's density of large universities, hospital systems, and Fortune 500 headquarters means demand is spread across education, healthcare training, and corporate learning and development functions.
Which New York cities have the most instructor jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Syracuse have the most instructor openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume given the concentration of CUNY and SUNY campuses, major corporate headquarters, and healthcare institutions, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional university presence and state government training needs that sustain steady demand outside the metro.

About 4% of instructor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly the field has adopted asynchronous and virtual delivery. How can I get hired as an instructor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate teaching assistantship or adjunct appointment at a CUNY or SUNY campus, where candidates with a master's degree in progress can gain classroom hours. Corporate training roles at large New York employers often hire from adjacent roles like training coordinator, instructional design assistant, or subject-matter specialist.
