Most candidates begin with an Initial Certificate and move to a Professional Certificate after completing a master's degree and classroom experience requirements.
How much do math teachers make in New York?
Math teachers in New York earn a median of about $87,230 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,400 for the lowest 10% to over $162,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire math teachers in New York?

New York's combination of large urban school districts, a dense charter school sector, and well-funded independent schools means consistent openings at multiple grade levels and specializations throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most math teacher jobs?
The cities with the most math teacher openings in New York are Hempstead, Ithaca, and Loudonville. New York City drives the majority of volume given the scale of its public school system and the concentration of charter networks headquartered there, while mid-size cities like Buffalo and Yonkers reflect the hiring needs of their own large urban districts and growing after-school and tutoring organizations.

The most realistic entry path is applying for a teaching residency or fellowship program, several of which are run through New York City Teaching Fellows and the NYC Dept of Education's teacher pipeline initiatives for candidates who are still completing certification. Schools in high-need districts often hire teachers on a Transitional B certificate, which lets you teach while finishing certification requirements. Adjacent roles like paraprofessional, math tutor, or instructional aide at a New York district give you classroom experience and internal visibility that leads to open classroom positions.
