Adjunct Professor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a adjunct professor in New York?
To become an adjunct professor in New York, you typically need at least a master's degree in your teaching field, though many institutions prefer a terminal degree such as a doctorate or MFA. New York does not require a state-issued license for college-level teaching. Most candidates apply directly to department chairs or academic affairs offices at CUNY colleges, SUNY campuses, or private universities, submitting a CV, cover letter, and unofficial transcripts as a starting point.
Which companies hire adjunct professors in New York?
Employers hiring adjunct professors in New York right now include Long Island University, The City University of New York, and City University of New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of four-year colleges, community colleges, and professional schools means hiring happens year-round, with the heaviest volume appearing before fall and spring semesters.
Which New York cities have the most adjunct professor jobs?
Brooklyn, New York, and Brookville have the most adjunct professor openings in New York. New York City dominates because of the sheer concentration of CUNY and SUNY campuses, private research universities, and professional schools there, while Albany draws openings from state government-affiliated programs and SUNY Albany, and Buffalo's demand is anchored by the University at Buffalo and a cluster of community colleges in western New York.
Are there remote adjunct professor jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many teaching fields, because online course delivery has become standard at most New York institutions. About 0% of adjunct professor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely CUNY, SUNY, and private universities have built out online programs. Courses in writing, business, technology, and general education are the sections most often offered fully online.
How can I get hired as a adjunct professor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is teaching a single introductory section at a CUNY community college, where hiring committees are accustomed to reviewing candidates whose experience comes from graduate teaching assistantships rather than independent courses. Completing a CUNY or SUNY graduate program puts you directly in contact with department coordinators who fill last-minute sections. Candidates with a completed master's thesis, a strong writing portfolio, or professional credentials in fields like nursing, social work, or accounting have a measurable advantage over those with only coursework.
Where can I find and apply to adjunct professor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to adjunct professor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from colleges and universities across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your subject area and availability, and apply directly to the institutions posting them.
