University Librarian Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a university librarian in New York?
The foundational requirement is a Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science from a program accredited by the American Library Association. New York does not require a state-issued license to work as a university librarian, but many academic positions, particularly those at SUNY and CUNY institutions, treat the ALA-accredited MLS as the professional credential equivalent. Candidates strengthen their standing through graduate fieldwork, specialized coursework in digital services or archives, and professional membership in the New York Library Association.
How much do university librarians make in New York?
University librarians in New York earn a median of about $78,590 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,340 for the lowest 10% to over $129,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire university librarians in New York?
Employers hiring university librarians in New York right now include Hofstra University, Syracuse University, and City University of New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of research universities, teaching hospitals, and law schools means hiring is broad and steady, with the SUNY and CUNY systems alone accounting for a substantial share of public-sector academic library openings statewide.
Which New York cities have the most university librarian jobs?
Hempstead, Syracuse, and New York have the most university librarian openings in New York. New York City leads by a wide margin given its concentration of major research universities, professional schools, and specialized academic medical centers, while Buffalo benefits from the University at Buffalo's large library system and Albany draws openings tied to state government research institutions and the University at Albany.
Are there remote university librarian jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of university librarian openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most academic library roles require an on-campus presence to manage physical collections, staff reading rooms, and deliver in-person instruction. The sub-areas most likely to carry remote or hybrid flexibility are electronic resources management, metadata and cataloging work, and scholarly communications roles.
How can I get hired as a university librarian in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate assistantship or practicum placement during your MLS program at a New York institution, which converts directly into verifiable professional experience. CUNY and SUNY campuses regularly hire library assistants and paraprofessional staff who are enrolled in or have recently completed an MLS, allowing candidates to move into librarian roles after graduation. Lateral entry also comes from roles such as archivist assistant, research services associate, or instructional technology coordinator at academic institutions, especially when paired with a completed ALA-accredited degree.
